Tie Dye cake

We had a cake competition at work last week, and I was thinking about how to make something different that might have a chance at winning. Normally I bake simple cakes from scratch, with no electric mixer - like banana cake or lamingtons. I was going to ask you guys for suggestions, but then I came across a photo of a Tie Dye Cake, and it grabbed my imagination.

Basically you buy two packet cakes, divide the mixture into 6 bowls, add a heap of food colouring so that you have six bowls with different colours. Pour each colour into the centre of the cake tin, and bake two cakes (red, orange, yellow cake and green, blue, purple cake) & to create a layer cake.

When it came out of the oven, I thought it hadn't worked - it looked brown on top like a normal cake. However never fear, once I cut into it, it was gorgeous & colourful.

Here are links to two recipes:

Rainbow Cake - the recipe says to include soft drink. I am told that this will help with the colours setting. It also has a great FAQ which includes some top questions like "Q: But I don’t *like* food colouring. A: Well, you’re wasting your time reading this, aren’t you? ". It also has suggestions for occasions where you might like to bake such a cake, including "Coming out to your conservative parents. If you’re a lesbian, they’ll be thrilled that you won’t be forgoing your feminine kitchen duties. If you’re the kind of gay dude who makes cakes for your parents, they were probably on to you anyway."

Tie Die Cake - this recipe suggests adding different flavours to each colour.
