Erin mimes Europe!
hey all! sorry for the lack of updates on me and erin's spring break trip to germany! It was *quite* the experience... and since there's just so much to cover, i thought that i would start off with a great little series of pictures we decided to call
the first major thing erin noticed about germany was that it was COLD. (this could have something to do with her living in hawaii, but that's just a guess. :)
the second major thing erin noticed about europe was that everyone WALKS everywhere! since she didn't bring a comfy pair of tennis shoes with us to berlin, we decided to go buy her (and mayyyybe me... *grins*) a new pair of cool colored adidas shoes, since they have those in europe. unfortunately, no one shops in berlin on sundays. erin was sad.
despite this, we carried on with life, which included a five-hour walking tour of berlin (which, like germany, erin realized was COLD!) one of the most important things we saw on this tour was the hotel from which michael jackson dangled his baby off of the balcony. erin re-enacted, three stories lower (for the safety of the baby).
a slightly less important stop on this tour was the german parliament, or "reichstag." it has a big glass dome on the top that looks down into the legislative parlor, which symbolizes transparent government: the people can always look in to see what the legislature is doing, and the legislators can look up to see the people, thus always remembering that the people are above them. very cool, *i* thought. erin just thought about how she was a better photographer than all the other pathetic tourists there.
she also thought she was a better model.
she was irritated with me for suggesting otherwise.
eventually, we made it back to the youth hostel where we were staying. berlin has a cool bear on its flag.
that night, we drove to amsterdam. it was FAR. definitely worth it though. despite the fact that erin had difficulty with her favorite spot in amsterdam, the botanical gardens.
luckily, she was cheered up the next day by the chocolate museum in brussels (who wouldn't be??)
another thing erin noticed about europe was that there are a LOT of random statutes. she decided she may be able to quit her day job to take over for the fire-blowing statute in luxembourg city.
a particularly great day of miming took place when we ventured out into the ardennes of luxembourg the following day. we had particular difficulty getting to our first stop, clervaux. first, we nearly ran out of gas. ("oh, so THAT'S what that weird word on the dashboard means!!")
once we did have gas, we toured much of rural luxembourg. we loved our GPS system, really we did, but where the HELL was it taking us??
FINALLY, we reached clervaux. they had lots of pretty buildings, including a huge church, a huge chalet, and a huge monestary.
erin intended to mime the parts of the trip where she nearly got very carsick, and also where some guy's side view mirror hit our rental car's side view mirror (our mirror shattered, his was fine... it figures) however, it's possible that those parts were so traumatic that she couldn't handle the reenactment. ultimately, we were always just incredibly relieved to actually get wherever it was we were going. :)
