Maybe It's Just Because I Grew Up In The Backside of Nowhere

I really do think my place of origin led me to believe some wacked-out thing. Is it just me or....

Did it used to be considered 'improper' for a bride to wear a strapless wedding dress? Wasn't there something about that style was OK for a ball gown, but not for the costume that one would be wearing into a place of worship? Or that if it was strapless it had to have a jacket over it until it hit the reception?

I didn't dream that, did I? Or was it only something the narrow-minded rednecks in North Florida believed?

The reason I ask is that I was looking through the Greenville paper and noted that of the 17 brides pictured in the society pages, 11 of them are sporting strapless frocks (including one who should definitely have known better cause it's not flattering and one who I wonder how she kept it up because she makes me look chesty!). It is definitely the new Southern style. So that makes me wonder if I somehow mistakenly made this rule up, though I could have sworn I remember reading it from that brief period in my existence when I thought I might one day have a reason to be in the market for such a thing.

Actually, a number of the dresses are quite lovely, though I'm a little perplexed by the bride who's standing against what looks like a gym wall, with hands on hips and arms flexed, showing off what looks like professional cheerleader biceps. I'm all for being body-proud, but I swear she looks like she's about to bust out into "2-4-6-8, who am I gonna dominate--the groom! The groom! Ya!"
