I haven't been that happy with the reception of my recent Rhett&Link fics, so I decided to write a slash Man From U.N.C.L.E. movieverse story. It's not quite something that could just have easily been written as gen - I think where things are headed is obvious from the beginning - but it's not that far of a departure from what I usually write.
And, yeah. Since posting yesterday morning it's gotten 714 hits and 71 kudos. Only three comments, but that's fine with me, they've been glowing.
In contrast, a gen MFU story I wrote last week has gotten 303 hits and 30 kudos, and my last two R&L stories, which are gen, have gotten ~100 hits each.
I've been going back and forth between kind of hating how shallow this bid for approval was, and being happy that, if I write something people actually want to read, it seems to be pretty well accepted.
If you're curious, the slash MFU story is
Antidote, written for H/C bingo (prompt - you guessed it - "Poisoning"). I have one more square to fill to get a linear BINGO; the prompt is "Unwanted Transformation." I'm thinking maybe slash Rhett&Link magic realism, to remove it enough from the canon rifs I've been doing that I'd be comfortable having them living different lives.
ETA - it's now my all-time most kudo'd story, 48 hours after posting.
