- I've engaged a little in the comments section of a Huffington Post article on
Sex, Desire, and Fan Fiction, by Foz Meadows. I like how the author explains what all the sexing is about:
Which brings us back to fan fiction, and the reason why it's so heavily saturated with sex: because when you take two people you already care about, whose stories you already know and whose attraction has either been long-established in canon or the detailed subject of your own imaginings, then any romantic or sexual interaction between them comes freely imbued with white-hot, ready-made desire. In the comments, there are plenty of "Hey, not all fanfic is about sex!" posts, which I hope Meadows would agree with; but I think it would have been interesting to see her consider gen fic (esp. gen h/c) and how/whether the basic drivers are the same. My fear is that she's rather overinvested in her thesis, hence the "0.01% of all Avengers fic has sex in it" statement someone made in comments (really????).
- Soccer last night was wonderful; I think I've learned to run again. Once upon a time I was pretty fast - details another time - with going from slowest-in-class to fastest-and-joined-a-track-team happening overnight, due to an arm cast changing how I was holding and using my body. Really, really. ANYWAY, I felt some of that yesterday - oh, THIS is how I use my legs! This is how I pump my arms! Different than young!teen me, but that's okay, I'm 80 lbs. heavier and my knees aren't so great.
- Got up early and copy-edited the proposal some more. Doing this remotely is a continuing challenge, but is making getting hours in easier. I think I'll be able to get through this week w/o taking leave; and I'm hoping, between editing, code research (have a favorite c++ tif reader?), and some c++ for another project, to not need to take much leave next week either.
