"I'm really glad you found someone, Pete. You deserve it."

He can see the tears welling in her eyes and fells the stab in his chest as if it had been his loyalties and faith betrayed. His mouth gums up and his mind swims with all the things he wants to tell her. I'm sorry you didn't find the one. I'm sorry you had to find her. I'm sorry she didn't deserve you. You don't deserve this.

Instead, he gives into default deflection and the only thing left that can make things a little softer for his partner. Bad humor and sarcasm have always brought a smile to her lips. He knows that nothing will erase the pain she is feeling, but as a last resort he can help her feel like her whole world isn't gone. So, he grounds her with words and shouts out the first thing that comes to mind, "Now I really feel like a girl.

He's rewarded with a smile and while it's not as bright as it usually is, there is a fire in her eyes that belongs there: a fire that speaks volumes where words have failed. She is not broken.

"You had a lot of vibes about H.G. didn't you?" Myka asked, seeing so much more in retrospect than she had realized. She had been aware of the team's distrust of H.G. She had been aware that Pete and Claudia had humored her interest more because they cared about her than anything H.G. might have done for them. They had held back their opinions and she couldn't understand why.

Pete watches the unspoken questions wash over his partner's face and he cringes. This is not the time for this conversation. He's known Myka for such a short period of time and yet he still knows her better than she knows herself, at least in this instance. Myka wants to understand why they humored her enamoration of this dangerous woman. Yet, she doesn't want to know the truth.

"Yeah," he finally says, the weariness ebbing in his voice. Honesty is something he's always believed in. If you're direct and honest with people then there's nothing to come back and haunt you. But Myka isn't ready to hear that the other's, with the exception of Artie, saw what she has yet to face.

"Why didn't you tell me?" she asks, with a look that screams fear and betrayal.

He bites back the words he knows he can't tell her. Because you were happy. Because for the first time since I met you, you let go. Because you were in love. There were times when he almost told her, times when he and Claudia had talked one another in and out of saying something. She deserved the chance to truly find a little piece of happiness for herself.

He tells her the next best thing. He trusts her. He would follow her through on her decisions no matter what: good or bad, crazy or logical, he has her back. It seems to satisfy her for now and that's all that really matters. Because soon, soon she's going to come to terms with her own feelings and he's not ready for the storm that will follow.
