Since I don't have unlimited budget for my trip to Japan in December I'm trying to save money where I can. So far I have a plane ticket (580€) and I know I'll need about a 100€ for food and transport per week (probably less but better be sure). Now where to stay, last week I'll be couch surfing with my friend so last week is covered but

Well about Japan trip, food is really not expensive there (in stores or restaurants as long as you don't eat on the main street. Better go in some side smaller street and find some small restaurant and you can eat for less then 1000 Yen). Plane ticket should be bough quite some months before (I bough mine around 2 months before going to Japan) and the price depends on where from and with how many plane changes are you flying ( I'm coming from Slovenia and have flown from Trieste Italy to Rome and then to Narita). And also the season you choose to make your trip. But yeah there's many sites you can check prices of plane tickets and all. I can give you few links if you want.
With limited budget all you need to look after you have bought a plane ticket and booked a hostel or a guest house (depends on how long are you planning on staying there) is food and transport (if you only plane on staying in one city is only tube transport, but if you are planing on travelling around Japan Rail pass is the best option).
If you have any more question you can add me on Skype (it's written on my profile page) and we can talk there ^^

You might also want to check homepage of some air companies, prices might differ per page, so be careful about the small print.
I started looking in August as well, but as I said price can change in a day or a week so... .
For 3 or 4 weeks it's best to stay in a guest house if you only plan on staying in one town, but if you plan on seeing more than Rail pass.
It's no problem at all, feel free to ask more question if you have them I'll be happy to answer them ^^
