Because of, among many things, things like the comments at the top of the dhcpd.leases file:

The actually helpful kernel message that you get when you try to play a DVD from the wrong region:
ATAPI device hdd:
Error: Illegal request -- (Sense key=0x05)
Media region code is mismatched to logical unit -- (asc=0x6f, ascq=0x04)
The failed "Send DVD Structure" packet command was:
"ad 00 00 00 00 00 00 02 08 04 00 00 "

The "something wicked happened!" kernel message that shows up often on some older on-chip ethernet card drivers, etc...
