Another late night

It's 1:14AM here and here I am fucking around on the computer again - everybody in the house except kiwitayro is asleep, and I don't have wireless on this laptop, so we can't geek next to each other. I think I'll be done geeking shortly tho, and I'm actually pretty tired. I was going to try to maintain a backwards schedule so that we could head out of here tomorrow night after the sing and drive thru the night to avoid the icky hot weather here in TX (as well as prevent my car from overheating, which probably isn't an issue anyway, but no AC sucks driving in the hot sun). Once we get thru about 8-10 hours of driving straight north, hopefully it will be less awfully hot, tho you never know...
On one of my roadtrips once, we (Dan and Emily and I) headed south in the middle of a January icestorm looking for warmth. We got out of the car for the first time in TN, thinking it must be warmer - it wasn't. We made popcorn badly in the 20 degree weather, nearly freezing our hands off in the process, got back in the car and didn't really stop until NM, where we froze our asses of in our tents. Oddly enough, the next day saw us naked in the sun in Arizona - the desert is strange like that.
I really want a Fujitsu Lifebook S2000 (but does the builtin 54g work under linux?) - anyone want to buy one for me? Tho I must say, for a six-year-old laptop, this Inspiron 3200 ain't bad (thanks Joy!). I didn't really plan on doing anything with it other than playing .mp3's on this roadtrip, but it's become a nice little geek-station for the time being. I got framebuffer support and a nice little USB mouse that Jon had sitting on his desk here working quite nicely... and it finally sleeps and wakes up, even in suspend-to-disk mode, quite nicely. Linux can really kick ass if you set it up right - this computer wakes up faster than any other computer I've ever seen.
Whenever I go away for awhile, I think of all the things I'm going to do when I get home. I hope I have the energy to actually do some of them this time. I'd like to insulate a couple of floors and shore up the basement so that we don't freeze to death this winter like we did last year. Then I'd like to refinish a floor or two and paint some walls and start working on the recording studio - whoohoo!
I hope that my daughter and her mother are doing OK - I didn't call them today. They recently had a really unfortunate and unexpected tragedy befall them - oddly enough, my daughter seems to be doing better with it than her mother. Well well, perhaps I shall go to bed or something. It's late. Or maybe I'll have another beer....
