When she's 7 years old, Santana decides that she wants to be a cheerleader. Her mom signs her up for camp, buys her pom-poms and a pleated skirt.
In the fall, she doesn't get it. She can’t tumble as good as the other girls, she’s always two steps behind in the dances.
At home, her smiling mom kisses her on her forehead, gives her a glass of orange juice and encourages her to try out again next year.
Nine years and a Head Cheerio position later, they lose Regionals.
Pride, Santana thinks, tastes like oranges.
