When Noah takes Rachel home after their third date, his hands grip the steering wheel as the car idles in her driveway.
He watches her carefully, waiting for her to make the first move. Really, he’s tempted to just angle his head and turn hers towards him gently, but he doesn’t want her to think he’s planning on anything big. Because, surprisingly? He’s not. Just a kiss.
“I have to get inside, Noah. It’s my father’s birthday?”
“Yeah? When ‘m I gonna get to meet them?”
She pecks his cheek. “Next weekend?”
“Sure, princess.”
She leaves; he knows he’s screwed.

He does. He grins some more, his eyes tightly shut.
A moment passes; Tina relents. “Okay, you can look now. Happy birthday!”
Artie finds his face is suddenly being slobbered on. He laughs.
“A puppy? You got me a puppy!”
“He’s a golden retriever. Isn’t he cute?”
“What should I name him?”
“Your choice.”
“How about. . .Cowabunga? Cowie for short.”
Tina rolls her eyes. “You nerd.”
“You love it.”
“Sad but true.”
