If living with a younger brother had taught her anything, it was that life wasn't fair.
It wasn't fair that her five-year-old brother could get away with hitting, kicking, and pinching her, but if she lifted a finger against him, she'd be punished.
It wasn't fair that her six-year-old brother's whole class showed up for his birthday party, but only a few friends came to her Sweet 13.
It wasn't fair that her father attended each of the seven-year-old's many soccer games, but he skipped most of his daughter's dance recitals.
It wasn't fair that he was only eight years old, lying in a bed in ICU with a machine helping him breathe, bruised and battered beyond recognition. It should have been her lying there in his place.
It wasn't fair that she was out shopping for her first car while her nine-year-old brother was being fitted for the first of many wheelchairs.
