His mom navigates the road, thumb-typing with one hand while the other is on the steering wheel. He sits beside her, tapping his foot to the music from the stereo.
"Damn, I told them to file that yesterday," she mumbles. Artie is thirteen and doesn't understand his mom's work problems, only that things are not good, and that she is crabby and distracted as a result.
He pushes his glasses up his nose and looks up at the red light that they are about to speed through.
"MOM," he cries.
"What-"
The world becomes metal and noise, then goes dark.
