WOW! What an end to the evening!

We had a game over at my friend Rich's house this evening. Around 10 the latest storm rolled in. After a while the lights started to brown out.  We started to hear the distant "boom" of electrical transformers exploding.  We decided to call it a night and head for home before the power went out.
On the way home I drove through a construction area. One entire lane of Henderson Boulevard was torn up for about a quarter mile. There were several flaggers on duty guiding traffic in the one lane that is open through the construction zone.  Yes, the flaggers were out in the wind and the rain and the freezing cold. The construction zone was lit by the huge portable quad-floodlights run by motor generators. There were floodlight units at either end and one midway through the construction zone.  Four big floodlights are blinding bright. The floodlights actually made driving through the construction zone difficult because they were in line with the roadway so it was like facing someone with their headlights on high beam.
Back on good road a half mile further I came to the next traffic light.  As I drove up to the intersection a blinding light came on ahead of me. It was up in the air a short distance and I thought that someone had just turned on another one of those floodlight units!
I was wrong. The blinding light brightened into an intense blue-white flare and then exploded in a huge shower of sparks that cascaded all the way across the roadway. I was watching a transformer flare with electrical arcs and then explode! The whole neighborhood on that side of the road went dark.
As you can see the power is still on at my place.
