The next day, Ryan sat next to Brad in the library. Without even saying hello, he got right in with the question on everyone of the team members minds “What spell has this genius tempting guy cast upon you that makes you want to be in a musical?”
“There’s no spell, I just did it. Besides, who cares?” Brad sighed, getting slightly annoyed.
“What about your best friend here?” Ryan asked, looking hurt.
The librarian, Karen Maruyama glared at him “Quiet in here, Mr Stiles”
Ryan pointed to Brad “It’s him Miss Maruyama, not me” He then turned back to his friend “How can you expect the rest of us to be focused on the game while you’re off somewhere in leotards singing in this ‘Twinkle Town’ thing?”
“Wait, hang on. No one mentioned anything about leotards…” Brad sounded a little worried now.
“Maybe not yet my friend, but wait! We need you, big time” Ryan seized his advantage, only to have the librarian looming over him “I tried to tell him, miss. I really tried”
Then he crept away, Miss Maruyama staring at his retreating form as Brad sat very still, thinking about what Ryan had said.

Inside the Science lab, Colin and the other members of the Chemistry club were hard at work, when Ryan, Greg and Wayne entered “We need to talk” Ryan said, speaking to Colin.
The two groups were deep in conversation when Kathy and Chip passed by the door, stopping to look and listen in “Something’s not right here” She said.
Chip nodded in agreement “They must be trying out for a way for Brad and Jeff to actually beat us out. The jocks rule most the school, but if they get Brad into the musical, then they’ve conquered the entire student body”
“And if those science geeks get Jeff hooked up with Brad, the Chemistry club goes from drool to cool. We need to save our show from these people” Kathy gasped, her eyes narrowing as they stalked away.
Ryan has finished making his plan to Colin and his team “You think this will work?” Colin asked, his friends looking dubious as well.
“It’s the only way to save Brad and Jeff from themselves” Ryan said with certainty.
Colin looked over at the other for a moment, waiting for their input. They all nodded, after all they needed Jeff as much as the basketball team needed Brad.
“Then we start tomorrow morning” Ryan said, satisfied they were finally getting somewhere.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next morning as students made their way into the school, Ryan looked around in a secretive manner, as if he was on a spy mission. He saw Colin across the courtyard and gave a quick nod in the best secret agent style he could.
Colin rolled his eyes at Ryan and met him in a comer “My watch says 7:45. Are we synched?” The taller guy asks.
“Whatever” Colin said, giving Ryan a weird look.
“Then we are on go mode for 12:05, lunch time?” Ryan asks again.
“Yes, we’re a go. But we are not Charlie’s Angels, ok?” Colin said, handing him a small laptop with a video lens attached to it.
Ryan grinned at him “I can dream, can’t I?” And they were off just as the bell rang for first class.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At exactly 12:05, the lunch bell rang and students headed for the cafeteria for lunch, but Brad instead headed for the locker room. He arrived to find his whole team waiting for him. As he stepped into the room, Greg closed the door behind him and stood in front of it, blocking the way out.
Ryan stood by a table covered with trophies and photos in the middle of the room. He waved his hand over the table and addressed Brad “You see all these. These were once proud Wild-Dog legends and they were in the championship winning team. And do you think any of these became legends by getting involved in a musical days before the championship playoffs?”
“Getcha head in the game” The team shouted out their motto, staring intently at Brad.
“These Wild-Dog legends became legends because they never took their eyes off the prize” Ryan said, on a roll. He turned to the team “Who was the first sophomore ever to make starting varsity?”
“Brad!” They yelled out, smiling as one.
“Who voted him our team captain for this year?” Ryan shouted out
“We did!” The team yelled out.
“And who’s gonna get their sorry butts kicked in Friday’s championship game if Brad is worried about an audition?” Ryan kept asking.
“We are” The team said together, depressed.
“Hey, there’s 12 of us on this team, not just me” Brad protested.
“I think you’re forgetting about a very important member of this team, my friend” Ryan pulled out a photo of a kid in a basketball uniform. Brad took a good look and his jaw dropped “That’s my dad…” He whispered.
“Yes Brad. Wild-Dog basketball champion, class of 1981. Champion, father and now coach, a winning tradition like no other” Ryan said, propping the photo against an old trophy.
Brad looked around at his team and couldn’t believe what they were saying. He felt like they were trying to deprogram him.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Meanwhile, Jeff and the rest of the Chemistry club were in the science lab with brown bag lunches. Colin was pointing to a series of photos and sketches on the board, showing his style of the process of evolution.
“From lowly Neanderthal, to medieval knights, all leading to…” He unrolled a full length photo of a pro basketball player with Brad’s head stuck on it “Lunkhead basketball man! For years, our culture has worshipped aggression throughout the years and we end up with spoiled, overpaid athletes who have done nothing to civilization other then slam ducks and touchdowns. That is the inevitable world of Brad Sherwood”
Jeff smiled, not knowing what was to come “But what has this got to do with me? I’ve got Laura waiting for me for rehearsals…”
“Jeff, Brad Sherwood represents one side of evolution…the lunkhead basketball side. And our side, the side of education and accomplishment is the future of civilization, is the side where you belong” Colin explained.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the locker room, Brad was doing his best to defend himself from the team “If you guys don’t know that I’ll put one hundred and ten percent of my guts into that game, then you don’t know me”
“Well, we just thought that…” Ryan began explaining.
“I’ll tell you what I thought, I thought you were my friends, my team-mates. We win together, lose together” Brad said, sounding really serious.
“But suddenly this new guy turns up and the singing that’s happening…” Ryan tried explaining, standing next to Colin’s laptop with the video-lick camera.
Brad sighed, tired of discussing this and defending himself “I’m for the team, I’ve always been for the team. Jeff’s just someone I met…” He didn’t know it, but the laptop camera was transmitting the live feed of everything he was saying to the science lab…
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
…Where Jeff, Colin and the rest of the Chem club was watching what Brad was saying “The singing thing is nothing, just a way to keep my nerves down, it doesn’t mean anything to me. You’re my guys and this is our team, Jeff’s not important. I’ll forget the audition, forget him and we’ll go get that championship. Everyone happy now?”
Colin froze the image of Brad on the screen “Behold, lunkhead basketball man. So Jeff, we’d still like you to be on our team though”
Jeff could only stare at the screen, the serious words Brad said settling in his mind. He was crushed and upset by the words, tears forming in his eyes ‘We shared so much, the singing, the kiss…Do I really mean so little to him…?’
The others in the team awkwardly shuffled by the door, no one looking at Jeff. On his way out, Colin asked “Do you want to grab some lunch?”
Jeff shook his head and kept staring at the image on the laptop. He just wanted to be alone and allowed one tear to fall. He wiped it away as he heard noise from the crowd below. Looking out the window, he could see an improv pep rally going on, the basketball team were swarming Brad and getting him pumped up for the big game.
He felt sad and lonely, his heart breaking as he expressed himself in song.
Jeff- “It’s funny when you find yourself, looking from the outside. I’m standing here but all I want is to be over there. Why did I let myself believe miracles could happen, ‘cause now I have to pretend that I don’t really care”
He left the science lab and made his way slowly down the hallway, his brown eyes filled with sorrow as he saw all the Wild-Dog banners and posters with Brad on.
Jeff- “I thought you were my fairytale, a dream when I’m not sleeping. A wish upon a star that’s coming true, but everyone could just tell that I confused my feelings with the truth, when there was me and you. I swore I knew the melody, when you smiled you made me feel like I could sing alone. But then you went and changed the words, now my heart is empty. I’m only left with used-to-be’s once upon a song”
He made his way down the stairway to his locker, wanting nothing more then to get away from all the Wild-Dog trophies, banners and murals. He wanted to get away from the Wild-Dog spirit.
Jeff- “Now I know that you are not a fairytale and dreams are meant for sleeping, and wishes on a star just don’t come true. ‘Cause now even I could tell that I confused my feelings with the truth, ‘cause I liked the view when there was just me and you. I can’t believe that I could be so blind, it’s like you were floating while I was falling and I didn’t mind, ‘cause I liked the view, thought you felt it too when there was just me and you”
He finally got to his locker and began putting books in it when Brad came over to him. He was beaming, filled with energy and high spirits from the pep rally “Hey, how you doing?” He asked.
Jeff couldn’t look at him, he couldn’t after what happened. So brad pressed on “Listen, there’s something I need to talk to you about, ok?”
“And here it is” Jeff interrupted him “I know what it’s like to carry the load with friends. I get it, you’ve got your boys Brad, so we’re good”
“Good about what? I needed to talk to you about the final call-backs” Brad replied, puzzled.
Jeff tried to smile, but it came out as a small sad smile. He felt better if he ended it now, before his heart got broken fully “I don’t want to do the call-backs either. Who were we kidding? You’ve got your team and now I’ve got my team, everyone’s happy. It where we belong” He smiled bravely, one of the hardest things he’s done.
Brad was now the one who was confused and hurt “But I don’t…”
Jeff didn’t let him finish “I don’t either” He said firmly, pulling the sheet music from his locker, handed it to Brad and walked away, trying not to let the tears fall.
“Jeff, wait. I don’t understand…” Brad called out, staring at his retreating form with hurt as the bell for the next class went off.
