A month later, school had started again at West Side high school in Chicago. It was the first morning of the new term and it was madness, kids and teenagers piling off buses and yelling at each other, showing of things they got over Christmas.
As Brad entered the courtyard of the school, other students gave him high fives and handshakes, smiling and welcoming him back. His best friend and basketball team-mate, Ryan ran up to him “Hey Brad, how you been?”
Ryan Stiles was the tallest member of their team, giving them a good advantage. He had short bushy brown/blond hair with emerald eyes and quite handsome. Before Brad could answer the question, all the other team-mates had appeared.
Wayne Brady was dark-skinned, but also quite handsome and great at defence, while Greg Proops had short brown hair and wore glasses, but had great wit and sarcasm and was a killer attacker.
They were all happy to see him, excited to be back together and really hyped up about the championship game coming up in a couple of weeks “Hey Ry, Happy New Year everyone” Brad greeted his friends.
“It’s gonna be a Happy Wild-dogs New Year” Wayne yelled “Because in two weeks we are going to the championships and win with you leading us, my friend” Brad laughed and agreed, nothing could stop them now.
Then at that moment, Kathy Greenwood and her best friend Chip Esten pushed their way through the group, both members of the Drama club. Kathy had blond hair, with full blown make-up and fashionable clothes on. Chip had short blond hair and was full of energy, it was just never ending.
Wayne looked up Kathy as she pushed her way through “Hey, the ice princess is back from the North Pole” He teased to his friends.
“She probably spent her holiday as she does every time” Greg said, smirking at the blond girl.
“And what’s that then?” Brad asked, curious.
“Shopping for mirrors, of course” Greg joked, making everyone laugh and howl as they walked past Colin Mochrie, president of the Chemistry club and was accompanied by Denny Siegal, John Sessions and Stephen Fry, other members of the club “Behold the zoo animals bringing in the new year” Colin said, the others agreeing.
The bell suddenly rang and everyone rushed to classes. Then Principal Drew Carey walked down the hallway, a young dark haired man with his mother following him “You’ll find that this is a wonderful school, with a great atmosphere, Mrs Davis”
Mrs Davis smiled at her son, who tried to smile back as he peeked in through a classroom door. His stomach flipped as he saw the first day chaos going on, nerves setting in as he gave his mother the puppy-dog eyes look “Mom, my stomach hurts. I can’t…”
“Jeff, I know you’re nervous but it’s only because it’s your first day here” His mother soothed him “You’ll do great here and you I know we can’t move back yet, I’ve been transferred here from work until you graduate anyway”
“Don’t worry, I’ve read your references. I think you’ll shine very brightly here at West Side” Drew said happily.
Jeff knew he was trying to be helpful, but it just made his nerves worst “I don’t want to be the freaky genius guy again, not after the last school”
“Then just be you” His mother said warmly, hugging him close before walking off with Principal Carey, leaving him to go inside the drama room.
The drama teacher, Mr Dan Patterson gave him a quick look before Jeff took his seat at the back. He never noticed Brad as he past him, the basketball star talking to Ryan, but Brad seems to notice him out the corner of his eye.
Surprised, he craned his neck for a better view, but other students were blocking the view ‘That guy, he’s from the New’s Years Eve party. What’s he doing here…?’
Before he could get a better look, the final bell rang and everyone scrambled for their seats. Mr Patterson stood in front of his class and addressed them all “I trust you all had a good holiday. Don’t forget to check the sign-up sheets in the lobby for new activities, most of all our winter musical. There’ll be single auditions for supporting roles and pairing auditions for the two leads”
Ryan gave a smirk and blew a raspberry at the word ‘musical’, making the others giggle and Mr Patterson glare at him “Mr Stiles, this is a place of learning, not your stupid basketball court, so pay attention”
Brad didn’t notice, he was still trying to see the new guy who looked so much like Jeff. Getting annoyed, he took out his phone and bought up Jeff’s number. He stared at the picture he took at the party, remembering that magical night that changed him as Mr Patterson kept going on “There is also a final sign-up for next week’s Chemistry Competition. Chem club president Colin Mochrie can answer any questions on that”
Brad then accidentally pressed the send button on his phone, making Jeff’s phone go off. Jeff rushed towards his bag, trying to make his phone stop. Kathy and Chip also took out their phones, thinking the call was for them instead.
Mr Patterson soon took control of the phone situation by walking around the class with a bucket “Ah, the sound of the cell phone menace begins”
He holds the bucket out to Chip and Kathy “Thank you, you two and I’ll se you in detention” They rolled their eyes as they dropped their phones into the bucket, as the ringing continued.
Jeff blushed as he finally fished out his phone, starting to turn it off but stopped in shock as he looked down at Brad’s picture on his screen, accidentally pressing the answer button instead of end.
Brad was staring at surprise at the picture of Jeff on his phone, before Mr Patterson got to Jeff and held out the bucket “We do not allow cell phones in class, so we’ll get to know each other in detention. Welcome to West Side, Mr Davis”
Jeff blushed and looked down as he placed his phone in the bucket ‘Great, just got here and got detention. What else could go wrong…?’
As Mr Patterson walked back to the front of the class, he saw Brad had his phone out and held it out to him “Mr Sherwood, I see your phone is involved. Great, I’ll be seeing you in detention as well” He smiled, Brad sighing as he dropped his phone in too.
Behind him, Ryan protested “You can’t send him to detention, we need him for practise after school…”
Mr Patterson glared at him “Detention for you too, Mr Stiles for talking back!”
Colin smirked as he looked back at his smart friends “That’ll be hard for him, Ryan can hardly count up to ten” Not realising the teacher heard him.
“Mr Mochrie, Detention also for you for speaking without permission!” Colin shut up then, looking quite embarrassed for actually having a detention, he’d never had one before.
“Now, is there anyone else who’d like to say anything?” Mr Patterson asked, going back to the front of the class, looking around his students.
Before anyone could talk, the bell rang and everyone rushed for the door, glad to be out of Mr Patterson’s rule.
