Chapter Ten
Health of the Sick, Refuge of the Frightened
“It is Christmas in the heart that puts Christmas in the air.” - W.T. Ellis
Wayne slowly rested his head against a hospital wall as he took in what the doctor just told him. Jeff had HIV-related pneumonia from being out in the cold so much. It was very serious, and the doctors told him that Jeff had to be admitted for at least a week. Drew walked up to him, his face soft and concerned. “How is he?”
Wayne sighed shakily, his gaze fixed on the floor. “They’ve got him on painkillers and IVs and-“ He quickly broke down, Drew immediately held him and let Wayne sob into his shoulder. “I don’t want him to die!” Wayne said in a strained voice.
“He’s not going to die.” Drew said gently but firmly. “Everything’s going to be fine.” He made Wayne face him and Wayne could see the depths of Drew’s eyes, serious and unwavering. “He’s gonna be okay. You just have to be strong for him.”
Wayne nodded, tears still gently slipping down his face. “Thanks, Drew.” Drew gave him another hug. Wayne looked into the window at Jeff lying on the bed, eyes closed, gently breathing. His head lifted as he got an idea. “Drew, I’ll be right back.”
“Where are you going?” Drew called in confusion as Wayne ran down the hall. “My apartment!” Wayne called back.
Jeff’s eyes slowly opened to the sight of Wayne sitting in a chair next to the bed. His face brightened a little as he saw Jeff was awake. “Hi.” Jeff said, in a raspy voice. “Hi yourself.” Wayne said back, taking Jeff’s hand in his, rubbing it to make it warmer. “How are you feeling?”
Jeff sighed. “Miserable. But better now that you’re here.” Jeff weakly shifted in the bed. “This bed sucks. You’d think after all the time in the hospital I’d be used to them. That, and it gets lonely.”
“Well, I have someone who can help with that.” Wayne reached underneath the chair and produced Angel. Jeff gave a weak smile, letting Wayne settle it by his head, laying his cheek against the soft fur. “Just what I needed.” He murmured.
“You should rest.” Wayne told him, seeing his eyelids start to droop. Jeff looked at his lover with an uncertain face, Wayne guessed it and smiled. “Don’t worry, Jeff. I’m not going anywhere.” He leaned forward and Jeff turned his head. “Don’t kiss me, I’ll get you sick too.”
“I’ll just do it on the forehead then.” Wayne kissed the top of his head and it sent waves of calm throughout Jeff’s body, he felt himself rapidly sinking into slumber. “Love you…” He mumbled.
“I love you too, Jeff.” And no sooner had he finished his sentence than Jeff had slipped quietly away into sleep. And as he watched Jeff sleep, Wayne realized that this was the first time they had said they loved each other. He kept holding his hand. It was a very nice feeling.
Everyone else was sitting in the waiting room. “We were in here just around five hours ago.” Drew said, checking his watch. “This has been quite a day.”
“I hope Jeff will be alright.” Chip said. Everyone else nodded. “I wonder how Wayne’s holding up?” Greg asked.
“I think he’ll be fine.” Ryan said. “He knew what he was getting into, and most people might buckle under the pressure, but he’ll pull through it.”
Wayne came out into the waiting room looking tired and worn. Drew stood and walked up to his friend. “Let’s get back to the hotel, you need to sleep.” He placed an arm around his friend’s shoulders and led him out, the others following suit.
Back at the hotel, everyone retired to their separate rooms. They all met up with Wayne before he went inside. “Are you going to be okay?” Colin asked. “Do you want to stay with one of us?”
Wayne shook his head. “No, I’ll be fine. Thanks anyway.”
“Call us if you need anything. Just knock.” Brad said. Wayne smiled. “I will. Good night, everyone.”
They all echoed the chorus of good night, going into their rooms, changing out of clothes, slipping into bed and pulling the covers over them.
Drew shivered a bit and Greg pulled the comforter higher. “Are you cold?” He asked, tucking it around his shoulders and neck. Drew shuffled closer to Greg, feeling the warmth of skin on skin. “I love you, Greg.”
“I love you too, Drew.” Greg realized that Drew was still feeling shaky about what happened that day. He had been kind enough to put it into the background for Wayne, but now it was all coming back to him. Greg wrapped an arm around him from beneath the covers and rubbed his back. “Are you okay?”
“I was just so scared that I was going to lose you.” Drew said in a small voice, holding back tears threatening to fall. Greg sealed his mouth over his. “Shh, it’s okay, we’re both alright. I’m right here.”
Drew held onto Greg tighter, giving him another kiss, that was deep and passionate. Greg gazed into Drew’s eyes and knew the look. “Greg…”
“You want me?” Greg asked quietly. Drew nodded. “I just want to know that you’re still with me.” Greg kissed him again and rolled on top of him, kissing him while gently rocking his hips to create friction. Drew moaned into his mouth and they separated just enough to shed their flannel pants. Greg sucked on Drew’s neck as their passion grew, feeling each other getting harder. Greg scooted to the edge of the bed and Drew reached out a hand. “Don’t go. Please, don’t go.”
Greg looked back at him, heartbroken that Drew thought he didn’t want to continue with the moment. He kissed him, running a hand over the soft hair. “I’m just getting the lube, okay? Relax, I love you, I’m not going anywhere.”
“Okay, I trust you.” Drew replied, settling on his back against the pillows. Greg’s heart melted at the tiny words and he quickly found the bottle, snapping open the cap and coating his fingers, setting the bottle on the nightstand. He gently slipped a finger inside, watching Drew’s face closely. Drew felt very tight, due to all the tension and because they hadn’t made love in almost a week.
Drew moaned in pleasure and pushed back a bit against his hand. “Feels so good…” He moaned, slowly becoming incoherent. “C’mon, Greg, break me in, I’m okay.”
“We have all night, so I’m gonna take it nice and slow.” Greg said, gently adding a second finger and then a third, stretching, gently probing. Finally, he shed his fingers and gave himself a generous lube job, positioning himself at Drew’s entrance. Drew wrapped his legs around him and they wrapped their arms around each other. “Now.” Drew whispered.
Greg pushed in slowly, just enough to bury the head, and Drew hissed. He immediately froze, rubbing Drew’s arms and shoulders to help calm him down. “Relax, Drew, open up for me.” Greg whispered.
“I’m okay.” Drew said breathlessly. Greg leaned down and kissed him, feeling Drew’s tension fall away, giving him more room to move. Finally, he pushed forward until he was fully buried inside his lover. “Oh, God, Drew, so tight…”
“Greg, more, please, love you.”
“Love you too.” They found a rhythm, holding onto each other, sweat slicking their bodies, grunting, groaning, moaning in unison as they rode out the pleasure for all it was worth. Drew cried out as Greg hit his prostate. “Greg, I’m close!” He nearly yelled.
“Together, Drew.” Greg reached down and started to pump Drew’s hardness in time with his thrusts, Drew let out a whine and exploded, Greg following suit. Greg slipped out and gently collapsed on top of his lover, Drew holding him tight as they both struggled for breath.
Finally, Greg rolled off of Drew onto his back and cuddled close to him. “Love you so much.” He murmured. Drew swallowed and nodded. “You too.” He frowned as he noticed the sticky mess between them. “Shower?”
“Yeah, that’s probably a good idea.” They helped each other out of bed and shared a kiss. “I love you, Greg.” Drew told him. Greg smiled at him. “I’m here, Drew. Good times and bad. We’ll face it all together.”
