Chapter Six

I Let My Mind Wander and it Never Came Back

“Promise me you’ll always remember: you’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” - A.A. Milne, Winnie the Pooh

Brad curled up into a ball at the sound of the alarm and groaned. He felt Chip drape an arm over him and he smiled, turning around to face him. Before he could remember the events of yesterday, he saw the bandage and his eyes widened a bit. Chip’s eyes were closed, so thankfully he didn’t see.

“Morning.” Brad said, giving him a kiss. Chip sighed. “Morning.” Brad frowned. “You okay?” Chip nodded. “Yeah.” Brad kissed him again and held him tighter. “C’mon, talk to me. What’s on your mind?”

Chip was silent for a bit before whispering, “Will you still love me if I get a huge scar?” Chip asked, keeping his eyes closed. Brad’s eyes widened in shock. “Chip…what are you talking about? Of course I’ll still love you.”

“I just don’t want us to be known as Beauty and the Beast from now on.” Brad sighed. “Look at me.” Chip raised his eyes to him and Brad’s brown eyes were stern. “I don’t care if you lose your entire face, I’ll still love you and I’ll still think you’re the handsomest man I’ve ever met. And I’m a little upset that you’d think I’d leave you because of a crazy man who punched you.”

Tears started in Chip’s eyes and he hugged his lover. “I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay.” Brad said tenderly, rubbing his back. “I love you. Just don’t doubt it, okay?” Chip nodded. “I won’t.” He raised his head. “Are you going to meet with the dasher today?”

“Just one of them. Apparently he wants to make things right. We’re meeting with the state attorney about it.” Brad murmured. He rolled on top of Chip. “What are you doing?” His boyfriend asked. “Well, I want to show you just how handsome you are.”

Chip blushed, but pulled him down for a kiss. He wasn’t about to doubt Brad’s love again.

The doorbell rang and Wayne answered it. It was Mike, holding a large box. “Hey, how are you doing? Chip’s still asleep, I’m afraid. Would you like me to get him?”

“No, let him sleep. I came to drop off his present I promised him.” He handed Wayne the box and he opened it with a gasp. “Wow, thank you so much! We’ve been wanting to get one of these but they’re sold out everywhere.”

“It’s the only one I got in stock, but he earned it.” Mike said with a smile. “Tell him not to bother coming in today; I called in Steve to fill in. Have fun!”

Greg and Ryan came down and looked in the box. “We heard from Chip we were getting one of these! C’mon, let’s hook it up!”

Wayne snatched the box back. “Oh, no you don’t! This is Chip’s gift, so we’ll wait until he gets up to try it.”

“I’m up, I’m up!” Chip said, running toward him and grabbing the box, Brad and Drew hot on his heels.

And with that, their afternoon got booked solid. At least until Brad had to leave for the attorney’s office.

Brad arrived at his solicitor’s office to discuss a deal with the man who left his paystub behind. The attorney said he was only representing this man and not the whole group, because nobody else decided to make amends for what they’d done.

Brad sat down at the table with Karen beside him and the kid started out by apologizing. “I’d really like to say sorry for all the grief we caused you. My friends wanted to have a good time and I was stupid to go along with it.” Brad was pleasantly surprised at how sincere he was. “And I’m willing to pay the full bill in exchange for the charges being dropped against me.”

Karen looked to Brad questioningly and he nodded. “We got an apology and the bill paid, and really that’s all I wanted.” Karen smiled. “Deal.”

The kid pulled out his wallet and handed Karen cash for the bill, and even pulled out $150 and handed it to Brad. “For your tip.” Brad was taken aback. “You really don’t have to-“

“After all the grief we gave you, you deserve it.” Brad took the money and shook the man’s hand with a smile. His attorney spoke. “I can still keep the charges against the rest of the group, because they still entered the bar with the full intention of not paying.”

Brad’s solicitor nodded. “I’m agreeing to drop the charges against him and I won’t fight the arrest being expunged.” Brad grinned. He knew that because they had already been reimbursed they no longer had reason to make any kind of deal with the rest of the group. The decent one among the dashers got off the hook, they were paid and he got a tip, and he went home with a light heart and a big grin on his face.

Once Brad arrived home, everyone was having a great time with their new Wii. He filled them in on what happened and they were more than pleased to hear it. Drew, Greg, Ryan, and Brad engaged in a game of Wii Sports, choosing bowling as their game of choice. Drew moved his Mii and didn’t get all the pins, but picked up the spare. He handed the Wiimote to Ryan who cocked it back without looking and heard an, “OW! MOTHERFUCKER!”

He looked behind him and Greg was on the floor, clutching his manhood. Drew quickly tended to him but couldn’t help quipping, “Way to go, man, I wanted to use that later.” Greg groaned. “Fuck you, fuck you very much.” Ryan shrugged his shoulders sheepishly. “Sorry.”

“Looks like Greg was our first Wii causualty.” Brad laughed. “Take your turn already, Ry.”

Ryan made sure there was nothing blocking his way and swung the remote, making another split. He handed the remote to Brad, who cocked his arm back and bowled a strike. “Nice one!” Chip said approvingly.

Brad grinned. He loved a day with a happy ending.
