Chapter six- Caught Out and The Gothic Tower.
Narrator: The show would go on, but Jeff wouldn't go to the Duke's supper that night, or the next.
In Greg's studio, Brad is acting badly what he's written down for the play. Greg is cooking, while Jeff is sitting down, watching his lover amused.
Brad: 'You have betrayed me' Mad with jealousy, the evil king forces the courtesan to make the penniless sitar player believe there was no love between them 'Thank you for curing me of this stupid obsession with love' Says the sitar player, throwing money to his feet and walking out of the kingdom forever.
He leaps onto the balcony, making Jeff jump from his chair to help him. Brad then turns around and smiles, making the others laugh and it down again.
Jeff (smiling): But a life without love, that's terrible
Brad: Yes, but the sitar player...with his magical sitar...
Greg: Wait, that's my part, his sitar says only the truth and says...
Brad and Jeff laugh, ignoring him. They have eyes for only each other.
Narrator: Yes, the only thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.
In Jeff's new dressing room backstage, he and Brad are busy kissing. The Duke then bursts into the room, and the two jump back and pick up scripts like they were rehearsing.
Tony: A picnic, yong sir?
Jeff: But we have so much work to do
Tony: Well, if he can carry a basket and blanket, I don't see why you can't do it in front of me
A couple of days later, the couple are back in Jeff's dressing room kissing more passionatly. The door bursts open and Tony enters with a lifebelt and oars. Brad moves away quickly.
Tony (oblivious): Still at it?
A few days later, Jeff was sitting next to the Duke, watching the dance rehearsals. Brad smiles at Jeff when he turns his head around and walks over to them.
Narrator: For try as the Duke might, it was just too easy for the writer and lead actor to make excuses to be together.
Brad: Jeff listen, I'm gonna need some help on this new scene 'Will the lovers meet at the sitar player's home?' Will you meet me tonight to help?
Tony (annoyed): But my dear, I've made us a lovely supper in the Gothic Tower tonight
Brad (acting hurt): Well, it's not that important anyway...
Jeff (standing up): Of course we can't wait. That is the most important scene of the play. We will be working on it until I'm satisfied
Tony: But, my dear...
Jeff: Excuse me, Tony
Jeff walks away, so does Brad only in another direction, both of them going up the stairs into the viewing gallery. Drew is helping some dancers reheare.
Drew: Beautiful, tomorrow we will work on act two 'The lovers are discovered'
Up in the gallery, Brad presses Jeff against the wall behind a pillar and kisses him passionatly
Tony goes over to Drew, angry and annoyed.
Drew: Tony, everything is ready for tonight
Tony: Eat it yourself, his affections are wearing thin
Drew: No, they can't be...
Tony: I know he loves his work, but he's always at it with that damn writer
Drew looks up to see Brad and Jeff kissing.
Tony: If I don't see him tonight, I'm leaving
He turns to see what Drew is looking at, but was stopped by Drew.
Drew: I'll make sure Jeff has the night off
Tony: Fine then, I'll meet him at eight
He walks off, leaving Drew staring at the couple with anger on his face. Back in the gallery, the couple are making their own meeting.
Brad (smiling): So you'll come then?
Jeff (smiling): Yes, go now
Brad give him one last kiss and disappears around a corner. Jeff walks the other way happily, only to walk into Drew's angry face.
Drew: What do you think you're doing? He holds the deeds to this place. He's bought you a new dressing room, he's making you a star. And now you're with the writer?
Jeff: Drew, don't be silly...
Drew: I just saw you together!
Jeff (guilty): It's just a phase
Drew: The phase will end. Go to him, tell him it's over and then go to the tower at eight
Jeff sighs as Drew walks away. He then walks away slowly around the nightclub gallery, and starts gasping for breath. His vision swims as he coughs and makes his way backstage, where he finally faints. Wayne and another dancer watch with alarm and concern, carring him to the sofa from before and calling the doctor.
Brad meanwhile is waiting in his hotel room, pacing the floor and sitting on the balcony. He is starting to believe that Jeff has gone to the Gothic Tower, to the Duke.
Backstage, John the doctor to the Moulin Rouge was treating Jeff, while Wayne and Kathy look on.
Kathy: Will he be up and about tonight?
John: Tomorrow morning the earliest
The stage manager storms into Drew's office with bad news.
Stage Manager: The Duke's leaving the tower
Bak at the tower, just as Tony was leaving, Drew makes it and stands in front of him.
Drew: He's confessing!
Tony: Confessing? I'm not buying any of that
Drew: He wants to be cleansed of his old life. Jeff wants to be pure for you, he thinks this night is like his wedding night
Tony (confused): Wedding night?
Drew: He wants you to feel...like a virgin
Tony: A virgin?
Drew: You know, touched for the very first time. Jeff likes it when you hold him and touch him
They both walk to the centre of the tower, the waiters are making the huge bed in the corner.
Drew: 'He's made it through the wilderness, somehow he's made it through. He didn't know how lost he was until he found you. He was beat, incomplete, he's been had, he was sad and blue. But you made him feel...'
The waiters make a circle around them.
Drew: 'Yes, you've made him feel shiny and new. Ohhh, like a virgin'
The dark room brightens up and the waiters dance around them.
Drew: 'Touched for the very first time. Like a vir-ir-ir-ir-irgin! Your hearts beat close in time! Gonna give you all his love!'
The waiters have gathered the bedsheet from the bed and is dancing around Drew with it, draping it over him like a veil. Tony has the look upon his face like everyone had suddenly gone mad.
Drew: 'He's so fine and divine, he'll be yours, until the end of time. Because you make him feel...'
The waiters do a wall kick behind him.
Drew: ' Like a virgin, touched for the very first time. Like a virgin, when your hearts beat in time. Feels so good inside, when you hold him, when you touch him'
He grabs the Duke and starts dancing and spinning him around the tower and balcony. The waiter's follow, still doing there own dance and Drew's lies seem to have worked on Tony.
Tony: 'He's so fine, and he's mine. Makes me strong, yes he makes me bold. Now, his love thawed out, yes, his love thawed out, that was scared and cold'
The song finishes with the waiters popping champagne bottles around them.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Narrator: Drew's lies had somehow averted disaster.
Brad is writing the play again, while Jeff is in the room with him, covered by the bedsheets and occasionally coughing while looking out of the window.
Narrator: But no lie, however good, would save Jeff
Backflash to when Drew got back to the Moulin Rouge. John Sessions, the doctor who treated Jeff took him aside.
John: Drew, listen. Jeff is dying, he has consumption
Drew: Dying? My star is dying?
Kathy and Wayne look grave as they listen on.
Drew: He mustn't know about this, the show must go on!
