screen layer is in GIMP. (GIMPs all I use now, so I'm good with explaining it if people need help.)

GIMP:
Brightness/Contrast
Hue/Saturation
and Screen layer are all your friends.

Good caps are KEY.

I tend not to sharpen ANYTHING. If your caps are good, you should never need to sharpen/unsharp mask. It is too easy to go overboard (especially starting out.)

And like nowgold says, make icons that please YOU.

Thanks for this post. I've been all through icon_tutorial, but I'm not the greatest at making this sort of thing and it helps to have all of this in one place. The links to screencaps are especially helpful.
