A/N - Colin is dissatisfied with life, does Greg hold the key?
Greg sighed and looked at me sadly. “Colin they have been friends for years they are, were, very close....” I felt my world crumble as he spoke. “but as far as I know they were never together, not like that.”
I actually slumped slightly in relief Greg, however, thought that it was something more and grabbed me to hold me up.
“Shit man! Are you ok? Col?” He asked in a panicked voice.
I ignored his concern and very, very carefully asked what I needed to know. “You don’t think that they were ever together?”
“No, I mean things have been really strained between them ‘cause Ryan keeps turning Brad down... Col? Where’re you going?”
I was up and hurrying after Brad and Ryan, if they were going to have a fight, because of me, then I should be there. I paused as I ran out of the motor home door, it was so bright, rubbing at my eyes I tried to force them to get used to the bright conditions, eventually and with streaming eyes I was able to look around. Neither of them were in sight, but that wasn’t a problem I could hear them yelling at each other round the side of the motel. I hurried towards them, their words becoming clearer as I went.
“So if you don’t love me why did you run after me like that?” That was Brad, I slowed, because that was the very question that I wanted answered myself.
“Because Colin knows that I care about him.” I blushed at that, er yeah, of course I did. “And you have been my best friend for years; I don’t want to upset you.”
“Well you have.”
I could almost imagine Ryan running his hand through his hair. “I never wanted to.”
“I know.” Brad sounded a lot calmer now. “But Ry, I... I just want.” He sounded almost broken.
That made me turn back, this was getting too personal, I wanted to be there for Ryan but this was for Brad. I was intruding. I headed back to Greg who was standing in the doorway of the motor home. I was still there, leaning against the side of the motor home when Ryan came back around the corner of the motel towards me some forty minutes later.
I started walking towards him the second I saw him, he looked drained, his shoulders down and his head bowed. I pulled him into a tight hug once I reached him, a hug that he returned almost compulsively clutching at me.
“Where’s Brad?” I asked him.
“Gone for a walk.” His voice was toneless.
“Are you alright?” He shook his head and buried his face in my shoulder. I gently stroked his back. “Come on Ry, I talked to Greg, we’re sharing a room tonight, and our stuff’s already up there.”
He sighed and let me turn him towards the doors of the motel leaning on me slightly and looking thoroughly depressed.
“It’s not your fault you know Ry.” I told him, giving his waist a gentle squeeze.
“I know...” He raised a hand and scrubbed at his face. “But, I mean, it’s Brad and...” He trailed off helplessly.
“I know Ry.” I noted that his hand was still up by his eyes and gave him a gentle nudge. “Hey, are you the one with the headache now?”
“Yeah, I’m ok though, not like you were. That was awful, do you get them often?”
“Not often but I’ve had them before.”
“Poor baby.” It was his turn to give me a gentle squeeze. “How do you feel now?”
“Truthfully?” I paused and he just looked at me expectantly. “Drained, not quite back to normal, but I’m alright, I just need an early night. I’m more worried about you.”
“Are you mother hen-ing me again?” He asked with a weak chuckle.
I leapt at the challenge. “Do you want me to?”
“Do you need to ask?”
“Should...” I cut myself off and shook my head slightly. “Ry, can we not do this now?”
“Alrighty Col, Alrighty.”
Whilst we had been talking I had steered us through the motel and up to our room, after letting us in I made a bee line for the nearest of the two double beds that took up most of the space and collapsed onto it. Ry followed more sedately and sat next to me.
“Col? What about dinner.”
“Not hungry.” I muttered into the pillow.
“Nor am I,” he admitted, “but we should have something.”
I groaned into the pillow and then rolled so that I was facing him. “I don’t think I can Ry, you go ahead but I really don’t want anything.”
He smiled sadly then leant over me stroking my face with one of his over sized hands. “Poor Col. And no, I don’t want anything either.”
“Good.” I reached for him, wanting nothing more than to just curl up with him and go to sleep.
“Come on Col, if we’re going to go to sleep at,” he checked his watch “half seven in the evening, then we should at least get ready for bed first.” So saying he hauled me out of bed and handing me my bag pushing me towards the bathroom. Grumbling I followed his instructions, whilst I was having a quick shower and getting changed I heard him phone Greg and excuse us from anything that might have been going on that evening. Not that anyone would have expected us to be there.
Ryan used the bathroom after me and by the time he came out I was curled up on the bed almost asleep, I felt him crawl in behind me and settle around me wrapping his arms round my waist and spooning me gently. I leant my shoulders back into him slightly.
“How are you doin Ry?”
There was a huge sigh in response. “I’m alright.”
“No you’re not.”
“No.” He acknowledged. “I’m not.”
“I know.”
“So, why’d you ask?”
“Seemed like a good way to start the conversation.”
“Oh.” His face was pressed into my neck, hiding despite the fact that I couldn’t see him. “Col, not now. Please. I can’t do it again.”
I squeezed his arm gently. “Ok Ry, I’m here when you need to.”
I felt his nod of response and holding his arms that were wrapped around me I allowed myself to drift off.
It was dark when I blinked back into consciousness, Ryan was still plastered against my back but he was tense, I knew he wasn’t asleep.
“Ry?” I murmured, barely awake.
“Col, can we talk?”
“Of course we can Ry.”
“What are we Col, I, I really like you, but I need to know what’s going on.”
“I love you too you big goof.”
“L, l, love?” he stuttered.
“I think so.” I assured him.
His arms clutched me to him. “So we’re a couple yeah?” He almost begged.
“Yes Ry, I would say so. Why, what do you want?”
“I don’t want this to end up like Brad. We were close; we shared rooms shared the driving and I had no idea that... that...”
“Did you ever sleep like this?” I squeezed his arms to make my point. “Did you ever kiss him?”
“No, and we’ve only ever kissed onstage, but it was so easy to lead him on. I didn’t mean to, but I did and I hurt him. I don’t want to hurt you; I don’t want to get hurt.”
I rolled over and regarded his face in the darkness, barely able to see him in the gloom. “Ry, I trust you. And I don’t want to ever hurt you.”
Leaning forward I kissed him gently; he kissed back before pulling away.
“We’re a couple.” It wasn’t a question; I don’t think that he could have allowed himself to ask that twice in one night, but I knew that he needed some response.
“We are. I love you, you idiot.”
“I love you too.”
Grinning so hard I thought my face would split I grabbed him and pulled him close, stopping just before our lips met to warn him. “I may love you, but if you pull away from another kiss tonight I’ll fucking kill you.”
I felt his bark of laughter as I claimed his mouth, he moaned into me before pulling back. I could hear the amusement in his tone as he started. “But, Col...” I didn’t give him a chance to finish, growling slightly I pushed him hard so that he fell onto his back, then pouncing on him I pinned him down and kissed him, hard.
He seemed to melt below me his humour banished. Feeling his hands creep up my back to pull me closer I smirked and pulled back to look down at him.
“Shut up.” I drawled at him.
“Ok.” He agreed pulling me back down.
We were the first at breakfast the next morning the ridiculously early night meant that even with the night’s activities, we were awake with the dawn, just holding each other.
Brad was the next person to join us. Unlike Ryan who looked well rested and relaxed Brad looked pale and tired; like he hadn’t had much sleep. I immediately felt uncomfortable, and from Ryan’s suddenly tense stance I think he felt the same.
He had paused when he first saw us, but squaring his shoulders slightly he joined us at the table.
“Morning, Col, Ryan.” He sounded terse. We responded in kind but it was obvious that Brad had more to say. “Guy’s I’m sorry, I can’t say I’m happy about it but if you two have something then I’m happy for you, for you both.”
Ryan’s hand seemed to shoot out from under the table and gripped Brad’s shoulder. “Thank you.”
Brad ducked his head, “It was never my place to object anyway.” He muttered. “Anyway, you know me, I’ll bounce back.”
“Friends?”
Brad smiled warmly at Ryan’s tentative question. I think it was the first warmth I’d ever seen from the man. “Always Ry, always.”
Ryan’s answering grin was beautiful. And whilst there was still tension in the room I was able to think for the first time that maybe the whole group of us could gel as a group. It was uncomfortable now but things were going to get better. The air was clear.
“Well hello my little kiddies. Have you been playing nice?”
“Yep, we have thanks Greg.”
Greg did a double take at my jolly tone and then a slow grin spread across his face as he understood.
“Well well, I’m impressed.” And that was the last time it was mentioned, Greg’s a snarky bugger but he knows when to leave well enough alone. “So, Col. You’re gonna play some more games tonight.”
“Oh am I?”
“Yes.”
And I did, we all took the morning to relax, I went for a walk with Greg and talked and joked about absolutely nothing important or even sane. I seem to recall that Ocelots played a major part in that conversation actually. I have no idea what any of the others did that morning, not even Ryan, but when we met up for lunch and rehearsals we were all in a good mood.
The warm up games took off, they were amazing, we were all going for it and setting each other up for jokes, we had tweaked the running order but for the most part we were sticking to what we were used to. It was therefore a surprise when Brad of all people made a late suggestion.
It was just before we played a game of helping hands, we had always played it with Greg providing the hands for Ryan but this time whilst we were bringing random stuff out to be used as props Brad stepped forward and took Greg’s arm.
“Hey, why doesn’t Col do Ry’s arms? You said you wanted him to play more games, and I think they’d work well together.”
Ryan and I exchanged a glance, this could be fun!
Stepping up behind him I slid my hands around his waist and sidled up to him, melding my body into his back. I felt the shiver run down his spine and sensed more than heard his repressed gasp.
Oh yes, I think I could get used to this...
