Solitude

Ryan stood under the flickering street lamp and took another drag off his cigarette. He had come out here to get out of the clamor of the bar that they had gone into after their show. It was a regular thing for he and his group to celebrate each show with a few rounds, and usually he was in high spirits himself. But he wasn’t feeling up to celebrating tonight. In fact, he had been melancholy for the entire trip.

He was grateful it hadn’t affected his performance tonight. He always felt bad when he allowed his mood to reflect in his performance. Exhaling the smoke from his lungs, he watched the cloud of smoke disperse into the chilly air of the evening, and didn’t notice as Greg stepped to his side and lit his own cigarette.

“You’re quiet, tonight. Want to talk about it?”

“Nah.”

“Sure?”

“Just came out to enjoy the quiet.”

“Why don’t you call him?”

“He’s probably still pissed.”

“I doubt it.”

“Why?”

“Colin doesn’t hold grudges, you should know that better than anyone.” Ryan conceded with a nod. Putting out his cigarette, he started walking toward the bus. “Where ya going, Ry?”

“To make a phone call.”

Scissors

Colin looked up from his book, to watch his lover juggling the newspaper in one hand, and a pair of scissors in the other.

“You could just look that article up on the internet and print it out, you know.” Ryan looked up, and grunted at him. Colin was wise enough not to pursue the matter. He knew how Ryan felt about computers, but he was going to reform him one of these days. So he left the other man to continue to wrestle with the cursed objects at the kitchen table, while he took his coffee and stepped into the office, pulling the door closed behind him.

Five minutes later, Colin retuned to the kitchen, where Ryan was now attempting to paperclip the cut up news article together, but the awkward shapes were making it difficult. Colin placed the newly printed article, neatly stapled, in front of Ryan, kissed the crown of his curly head, and put his coffee mug in the sink.

Ryan grunted again.

“You’re welcome.”

Metallic

The rain had caught them by surprise, forcing them under the eves of the nearest building. “That came out of nowhere,” Colin mumbled, huddling closer to Ryan. “So much for going to the baseball game.”

Ryan wrapped an arm around Colin, giving him some body heat. “Well, we can find something to do inside.”

Colin looked up into his eyes, his own chocolate eyes twinkling. “What did you have in mind?”

“We can do that, later, Col. You’ve got a one track mind, you know that?”

“I blame that on you. You’re a bad influence.” Ryan could only smirk. “So what did you have in mind?”

“Well, here we are in front of all of these stores. Lets check them out.”

“You hate to shop.”

“I didn’t say we had to shop, just look.”

“What’s the difference?” That earned Colin a look. “Okay, okay. It’s better than standing out here waiting for the rain to stop.”

They browsed through three or four small stores before entering a larger department store. While Colin wanted to look at electronics, Ryan was more interested in sports equipment, so they went their separate ways for ten minutes meeting in the middle.

When they met, Ryan held up a short plaid skirt. “I’m buying this for you to wear.”

“I’m not wearing that. It’s a woman’s skirt!”

“It’s not a skirt! It’s a kilt!”

“Alright, alright. I’ll wear it, if you wear this.” Colin held up a tube of metallic red lipstick.
