Oh, no. I'm so sorry you found this out and it's scared you so badly. I wish I knew anything about this. The only person I know with SA uses the CPAP machine, but if I hear or learn of an alternative I will definitely let you know!
I'm also an asthma sufferer, (which makes smoking doubly stoopid!); waking up feeling like someone is wrenching a strap around your chest is not fun. I think I wake up more from asthma and heartburn, actually, than the SA, so I know exactly what you're talking about. Do you keep an inhaler by your bed? Also, I've learned some breathing exercises that have helped in the past. You might look into something like that, too.
It's so hard to function without feeling rested. And then there's the ridicule when all you want to do is sleep for 12 hours on days off. :(
