Title: Relativieren
Author: Mirrordance
Pairing: None
Rating: M
Status: Complete, 5 parts
Warnings: Violence, character death
Summary: "Ran Fujimiya is missing in action, and Yoji asks for Schuldich's help to find him. Together, they will find that there are things much better left unknown-- secrets about betrayal and guilt, and worst of all, the depths of the darkness of a human soul."

Read this because: it's part-mystery, part-character study. Starkly original, it'll keep your interest from the first scene to the chilling end.

Weiss is on a mission without Aya (who went MIA a few days before). Mission turns ugly (well, we don't really get a sense of "turning" so much as "turned"), and Omi is dying. That's right. Right of the bat. That pretty much sets up the tone for the rest of the story. Very dark, very foreboding.

With Weiss down to two members, Youji wants answers regarding Aya's whereabouts. He tracks down Schuldig and asks for his help. Schuldig acquiesces. With his assistance, things start to unravel. And boy, what an unraveling.

The fic's strongest point is its exploration of Schuldig's telepathy. Our absent mod calls it "fascinating and unsettling," with which I agree. The author makes a truly compelling study of Schuldig's abilities: the difference between trying to understand a mind and trying to manipulate it, the consequences of being so intensely immersed in others' thoughts, the boundaries of identity: it's all there.

I liken the fic to a swinging light in a pitch-black room, illuminating yet eerily menacing.

Like everything else, this fanfic's not perfect. Dialogue in some parts is awkward, and I have a hard time getting a visual of Schudig helping old ladies cross the street. Other than that, it's excellent and very much worth the read. Heck, it's worth it the third time around. I still get chills.
