Read this because: This fic takes a tired old Weiss Kreuz fanfic trope, and one which is all-too-frequently carried off in a very bad, implausible way at that - the idea of Weiss and Schwarz teaming up against a common enemy - and makes it work.
The story starts out simply. Weiss receive an unusual assignment: investigate the kidnapping of a Kritiker higher-up's teenage son. The team have no difficulty tracking the kidnappers down, but what at first seems to be a straightforward rescue mission is soon revealed to be something more sinister, and far more dangerous, than Weiss were counting on. Things degenerate even further when Schwarz arrive, having been tipped off by a third party as to their whereabouts, and both teams find themselves with enough of a fight on their hands just in trying to escape with their lives - never mind with all their members...
Of course, that's just the very start of it. The plot is delightfully twisty, the regular characters and their interactions are all spot-on, and the action scenes (including a set piece at Tokyo Tower and a gripping car chase) are amazingly well-realized. What's more Vitani creates, in the form of the Deceivers, an OC team who genuinely do give both Weiss and Schwarz a serious run for their money. As if that wasn't quite enough to be getting on with, the fic also features Ken reacting in what is possibly the most believable manner I think I have ever seen to an unexpected come-on.
I'm attached enough to this fic to consider it an apocryphal part of Weiss Kreuz canon - something Takehito Koyasu really meant to mention, but somehow forgot to. Yes, I think it really is that good. Set aside an evening and give it a go. It really is one Hell of a ride.
