I might be reading too much into it, but I see this story as having drawn a parallel to that tendency, creating a scenario that similarly excludes him. It allows the author to explore just how Omi might feel about being left out due to the attitude that he's too young.
It isn't a tone of self-pity or anger that we get. Omi is wonderfully characterized, his introspection delivered with just the right degree of analytical distance that the reader is able to understand the loneliness he feels even as he experiences the conflicting emotion of avoidance. There's a heartbreaking story to be told under the steamy porn here. It isn't about Omi wishing he were amongst the pile of bodies, but about his wishing he were a part of the more emotional intimacy Ken, Youji and Aya share with one another.
