I’m a little late to the party here, seeing as how this story broke last thursday, but I want to shout the news from the rooftops!
Guillermo Del Toro is directing The Hobbit!
There've been rumblings about it for quite some time. After the whole kerfuffle about the film rights was settled with the studios, Peter Jackson was slated to produce, and the internet was suddenly abuzz about the search for a director. It actually looked like it was going to be Sam Raimi there for a while. Yeah, I know. Anyone who can do that to the third Spiderman movie doesn't quite have my confidence. But then Del Toro's name came up and all was right with the world.
It’s not just one movie, either. Jackson will be collaberating with Del Toro to create another film that takes place between The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, bridging a gap of about 70 years on Middle Earth. Alot of the old cast members will be getting on board, with Sir Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis already listing the movie in their respective filmographies.
All I can do at this point is get down on my knees and thank God. Del Toro is one of my favorite working directors, and to see him taking on a project that means so much to me is pretty fantastic.
