Good. Bad. I'm the one with the mop.

I should probably be working on something. And I am, sort of. I wrote up some things about Granite City (that, technically, I'd already written, but then forgot where I left the notes)... so that counts as productive. Tomorrow, I think I'm going to try to clean up some of the trash in here... which should roughly amount to the whole of my work capacity for the day. Being achy sucks.

I might end up with a complaint against me at work by a customer -- see, I was called, simultaneously, to two floor spill cleanups (one in aisle 7, and one in aisle 9.) While on my way over there, I was stopped by another member of maintenance (who was on her lunch, but takes it upon herself to stop me practically every time I pass by her - and sometimes seeks me out when I'm on break, or using the bathroom... - to 'helpfully remind me' that I'm supposed to be doing my job. This time, she stopped me to ask if I was going to go take care of those spills. Considering I was heading in that direction, and she isn't supposed to be bothering me when she's off the clock... oy. But that wasn't the big problem.

The big problem occurred after I had checked on the status of one spill (the only other maintenance person on duty was attending to it) and was en route to the other. I was stopped by a customer, who stopped me to point out a mop display. "You see those Vileda mops?" After I nodded agreement, she announced that she was looking for a Vileda broom. I told her the brooms (and mops) we had, aside from the sale displays, were located in aisle ten. The customer stated they'd already checked down there, and looked expectant. I suggested that if she couldn't find them down there, the best alternative was to head over to Electronics and ask them to page a member of management, who'd be able to resolve whether it was an out of stock concern or a 'we don't carry it' concern easily. She wasn't in the mood to accept that, and demanded I do something. Meanwhile, the page to get the spill repeats itself.

She continues, stating that the last time she had problems finding something ('vanilla yogurt'), she spoke with an associate and 'it got taken care of.' I politely explained that she probably had spoken to an associate who worked in the department. I further explained that, in all likelihood, vanilla yogurt is generally something we have in stock, whereas a particular brand of broom may or may not.

Of course, this annoyed her more greatly. She proclaimed that the associate she'd spoken to last time had 'taken out a clipboard, written it down' and somehow resolved the problem - apparently, she clarified, she had been looking for Weight Watchers Vanilla Yogurt in particular, not just 'vanilla yogurt'. "And I didn't get sent traipsing half a mile for it, either!" (Note: The Electronics department is not directly adjacent to Grocery; but it is located about five hundred feet down, or less. Exaggeration, thy name is customer.)

I politely reiterated that said associate had probably been a worker of that department, that I was a maintenance associate who was en route to clean up a spill in aisle seven, and that I do not have any knowledge of the department she was asking about, nor do I know who works in that department, and told her that if there wasn't a department associate in aisles 9 through 11 (the paper goods/chemicals department relevant to her questioning) that the fastest / best way to answer her question would be to consult a member of management (via the Electronics area), who would be able to solve her problem. She huffily informed me that she'd call when she got home (either to find out the answer to her question, or to complain about my existence, she didn't specify) and left me to continue my run to catch the spill in aisle seven before someone could trip and break their neck on it. (Turned out it was in aisle five, anyhow - stupid spaghetti sauce.)

So yeah. I'm perfectly aware that it could have been handled better - but I've noticed that when I'm being pressured by other influences, my customer service is less than stellar.

On the plus side, I found some cool stuff today.
