Before seeing Lily fall to the ground Joe could see her eyes, blood red, puffy, strings of pink erupting underneath. Joe had one word on his mind, Bridgette. She wasn’t kidding when she said she was going to blind sight here, he just didn’t think she would go so far. Starting to think back to when Bridgette had her contact case with a can, he had to know what her weapon of choice was. He flew out the door, leaving Kevin to look back and notice a lifeless body slumped on the floor. He gasped as he lowered his body, holding his hand on her cheek, how could he not notice before Joe?
“Emma? Emma come on wake up.” He lowered his hand towards her neck pressing against the vein feeling a pulse she was still breathing. “Come on, you’re going to be alright now.” He pulled on his tie peeling it away from his neck as he lightly dusted the sweat off of her forehead.
He began caressing her hand noticing her cheeks flushed and her eyelids puffed, her skin began to loose color. He lowered his head to his knees.
Kevin snapped his eyes shut, hoping that everything was going to be alright she would wake up in a few minutes. She just had to open her eyes up. The seconds wore on.
“I wish there was something more I could do for her? Where did Joe go anyway? Well as long as I stay here than I’m here for her. I have to be here for her, she’s my friend, and you can’t give up on friends.” Kevin said to himself. He felt a hard squeeze against his enclosed hand.
Joe had never fun faster in his life; he ran into Nick as he stumbled back and threw his hand up.
“Joe! Where’s the fire? You didn’t get into the marshmallows again did you?” Nick said laughing.
“No, its not marshmallows this time Nick but if there was a fire Bridgette would be the last to know!” Joe said trying to get away from Nick, as Nick pushed his hands on Joe’s shoulders stopping him from go anywhere. “It’s Emma, Nick she did something to her contact lenses.”
“Does this have anything to do with when you ran off after Bridgette and I went into her dorm and found a can of hairspray on the floor?” Nick asked his brother shyly, Joe’s eyes popped.
“Listen to me Nick you have to tell Kevin what you just told me, he’s with her now. Emma needs our help now, I told you once that you should open your eyes just keep remembering that, I have to find Bridgette, keep your eyes sharp Nick, please for me?” Nick nodded running towards the hall.
Bridgette shook her hairspray can as she opened her eyes placing the can on the sink. She was about ready to apply her blush when there was a slam on her door, somebody started jiggling the doorknob.
Joe stood in the doorway, not even being asked to come in he began pacing on her floor.
“Bridgette how dare you! If I wasn’t such a gentleman I would call you something. But I’m better than that. You’re nothing more than what I used to be. You tainted her contact lens so she would have to go around wearing her eye glasses, making her friends question her. You took hairspray to them, just admit you’re wrong!”
Bridgette’s voice got higher looking shocked. “Wow Joseph that’s just a burning question isn’t it? If you can’t figure it out you must be blind.”
Joe stopped short; on his way out he shoved up against Bridgette’s left shoulder hard.
“Trust me Bridgette I’m not blind by any means. You want to ruin her life? Well you’re going to have to get through me and my brother’s first! Don’t try anything else or you will be sorry. And don’t call me Joseph, only the ones I care for can call me that!”
“Well than don’t call me Bridgette, I told you my name is Bridge as in the bridge of a guitar!”
Joe would have liked to call her what he really thought of her, but he had to get back to Emma.
Climbing the stairs two by two, he could see Nick climbing down the opposite way.
“She’s?” Joe asked out of breath.
“She’s awake, Joe.” Nick said climbing the rest of the way down putting two and two together, and making his way for the door, his job was done for the night.
Lily’s head began pounding her awake her eyes still foggy as they adjusted, trying to remember what had happened, when she felt her eyes burn she remembered moments before she ended up here. But where was here? She felt around with her finger tips as she tried to grab on to anything, she felt warmth in her fingers, trying to make out what had grabbed on to her. She squeezed it hard.
Emma started to come to, as Kevin pulled his fingers back hitting him squarely in the eyeball, his legs came out under as his legs came up over himself in a somersault laying flat on his back. Emma’s eyes snapped open, rolling to her side to try and get up she noticed Kevin rubbing his eye socket.
“Kevin what happened to me? Why are you over there? Where am I? I’m not hanging upside down am I?” She asked staying putting her hand to her head that was still hurting against her pale skin.
“Who me? No I’m fine; I just got startled is all.” He crawled back to her, lying next to her. “Are you fine? You fainted, Just calm down your alright now just tell me how your feeling.” He took his hand and placed it on her forehead, it felt cool.
“To tell you the truth I didn’t have time to eat much today except for a really quick dinner which was nil to nothing. But I can’t figure out why my eyes are burning, do you mind if I close them the light hurts too much.”
“Go ahead Emma.” He pushed himself off of the ground, patting his hand on her leg as she lowered her lids closed.
Nick ran up the stairs as Kevin stared at him frantically.
“Emma? Is she alright? I know what’s wrong, that girl Bridgette!”
“What about her Nick? Emma just woke up a few moments before you arrived.”
“Take your contacts out Emma…” Nick said forcefully.
“Why Nick? She didn’t have my contact lens case.” Emma asked speaking from the floor as Nick looked down.
“She did too, she stole them, and she took hairspray to them.” Nick said now making his way to the stair well.
“She did not?” Kevin said shaking his head.
“Kevin? Would I be here in pain if she didn’t, I should have seen it coming. That has Bridgette written all over it.”
“Thank you so much for telling us Nick, Emma what can I do to help?”
“Just wait here with me until Joe comes back. It burns so bad!” Kevin lowered his body down kneeling as she tried opening her eyes and pushed her self so that her back was pressed on the floor boards, Kevin pressed on her lids making her stop.
“Just close them; I’ll wait here until Joe comes.” Kevin reached for her hand again noticing the blank ink stain tattoo on her arm, this time he was fully awake, he didn’t question her about what was written on her skin as she squeezed her eyes they began to water, a single strand of water falling down her cheek, Kevin lowered his thumb brushing it away.
Joe had just finished up relaying the events of the night and what Bridgette had done when Emma had taken her last contact out.
“Does that feel any better?” Kevin asked standing up moving towards the door, Emma rolled over on the left side towards Joe.
“Well besides the fact that I can’t see Kevin standing over there. I’ll say that things are back to normal.” She said scratching her head, a lock of brown air spilled out. Joe quickly noticed and stuffed the hair up, pulling off like he was grabbing hold of her contact lenses.
“Well do you need anything?” Kevin asked his feet on the threshold.
“Yeah, it would be great if I could head back to the cabin soon, could you just get me my glass…” She stopped, rolling over on her back looking up at the ceiling; Kevin didn’t know that Emma wore anything else but contacts. “Glass of water, Kevin? I’m parched!” She said as Kevin gave the okay sign with his hands, they heard Kevin’s steps fade away.
“You meant glasses right Lily? Listen I’ll go and get them for you and I’ll meet you back here soon.” Joe said, shaking her shoulder, and letting himself out.
Lily closed her eyes again, waiting for the headache to go away, she heard tapping on the floor boards, and something tickled her fingers. She snapped them open seeing a half calico/half Siamese kitten no more than a few months old sniffing her fingers. The kitten had striking sky blue eyes, its fur white, brown, cream, and black in a pleasing color palette, the tail all black with a stripe of white. The cat let out a loud meow, rolling its head against her palm.
Kevin could see the light on in the cafeteria, he wish he could do something more than get a glass of water for Emma, but he knew something he could do he could call up Lily, both of their chemistry minds might piece together what she might do with lack of food to the system. Walking inside, he got the busy signal. He located one of the cooks and asked for a glass of water, sitting down again he dialed up Lily’s number.
“Come on Lily pick up! Not the answering machine!”
“Hey are you trying to get a hold of Lily Allen?” The cook asked putting the cup on the steel top counter for him.
“Yeah? Do you know her?”
“Know her? She’s practically family!” The cook said, as Kevin read his name tag noting his name was Hunter.
“Well, I’m a really good friend of hers and I’m just wondering why I can’t get a hold of her at home.” Kevin said absent mindedly placing the cup to his lips.
“Home? How long have you tried calling her?” Hunter said trying to keep Lily’s secret.
“For a few days now. Why have you heard from her recently?” Kevin said now finishing up the water.
“We are talking about the same Lily right?” Hunter asked drawing the cup towards him.
“I think so…” Kevin said looking down at the empty cup. “Oh, man! I was supposed to bring a cup to Emma, one of the instructors she fainted and she needed me to bring her some water, doesn’t help that I just drank it.”
Hunter’s mind was reeling. “Listen, I’m going to give you some soup to give to her and a tall glass of ice water. If you don’t hear back from your friend, take it as it comes man.”
Kevin headed out the door as Hunter muttered to himself. “That girl, I don’t know how she does it!”
“Hey Emma I’m back, will you sit up I brought you some soup?” Kevin said now looking at Emma who had gotten up by herself holding a precious animal, petting it silently, it jumped out of her hands and started going in and out of Kevin’s legs.
“Look what I found when you went out? Isn’t she precious? I always wanted a cat but I’m never home enough to take care of it, and my mom and dad don’t really want any pets in the home as far as I know.”
Kevin placed the bowl of soup in Emma’s hands as she got up and sat in a chair in the corner flipping the top open. Kevin picked up the cat as it began twitching its nose trying to lick Kevin’s hand.
“She’s has such a beautiful coat, well if she doesn’t have any tags I assume she wants us to be her parents, nobody else seems to want her. She must have been here for a while, doesn’t look like she’s had much to eat.” Kevin said.
“You like cats? We can’t just not feed her; she needs us just like I needed you and your brothers tonight, thank you by the way.” Lily replied placing the spoon in the bowl. Kevin lowered the kitten to the ground nodding and sitting on the floor next to Emma.
“I do like cats, and you’re welcome, I’m just sorry that Bridgette is so mean to you. So what should we call the cat?” Kevin asked grabbing the spoon full of chicken and noodles and placing it near her mouth, as Emma clamped on.
“You don’t have to feed me Kevin, I’m can do it myself…” Lily replied lowering the spoon to the bowl to get broth, the kitten had climbed up on Kevin’s knee and started batting its paw on Lily’s hand causing the broth to spill out from the spoon. The cat cautiously ran to the hot liquid puddle and lapped it up, twitching its nose, and snapping its tongue back in.
Lily and Kevin looked down at the cat together, noticing it’s resilience to eat the hot liquid but the whole time twitching its pink nose at its food.
“Tabitha!” They both said at the same. “From Bewitched!” They said again together, laughing at themselves!
They left the hall that night, Tabitha meowing and looking up at them, and returning to the inch puddle of broth that Lily left for her, promising to bring some milk to her tomorrow.
Heading on the trail, Joe came to an abrupt stop at Kevin and Emma’s feet, something hidden behind his back, a pair of glasses in a soft black case. Unable to give the glasses to her, Joe had to hold on to her hand, so they could walk her back together. She almost started walking off towards the left side, but Joe quickly pulled her towards him.
“This way Lily.” He whispered in her ear, luckily Kevin had looked up towards the western corner of the campus and by the time he looked back towards Joe and Emma she had straightened out.
“Well, I hope you feel better now, goodnight Emma!” Kevin said waving his hand giving her a quick hug and stepped down the stairs leading up to her cabin.
“Thank you again Kevin, and you too Joe.” Lily said turning to Joe, he moved towards Lily and grabbing her hand he placed her eye glass case in her hand, closing her fingers over them, he turned her hand over. He planted a soft kiss in the center of her hand.
