Instrument case making project.

 Ingredients:
Growing frustration that my stuff looks like everyone's stuff, and it all goes in boring, black nylon containers.

A need for a hard case for my mandolin to protect it from the elements and the fact that I occasional drop it. Or drop other things on top of it.

I have recently seen Darjeeling Limited, and was impressed by one of the reoccuring props, the luggage.

I also need a case for my banjo, 2 guitars and at least one drum.

So...

I thought it would be a great idea to build some custom cases, in the style of the vintage sets of matched luggage. Then I could put my monogram, device, travel stickers what have you on the cases, and be able to recognize my stuff from across the room (the burgundy canvas with leather trim and brass hardware - that's mine!).

I'd probably build mainly out of plywood and poplar hardwood. Close-cell foam for the cushiony stuff. Bewilderingly large choice of good quality hardware is easy to find.

Just need to think about fabric.  Canvas for the outside is period (as is leather, but I don't want to make that investment for the prototype). Silk or velvet would be good for the interior.

The bodhram case, of course, would look exactly like a hat-box.
