I'm not usually scared of insects, but...

Do cockroaches jump?  I was under the impression that they scurried.   I found a huge, mystery bug I identified as a cockroach in the shower after getting off work at midnight last night.  Since my parents (Moved back in with them 'til my old lease is up) were sleeping, I tried to be a good houseguest and kill it silently.  So I put a shoe on to stomp it slowly, even though I know the sound is about the grossest noise that ever lived.  And the rat-bastard jumped.  A lot.  And I was not expecting it to.

I made a combination yell/realize-I-shouldn't-be-yelling-at-this-hour sound, which came out as some kind of choked, thoroughly ungodly and unforgivable noise.  If a dying rabbit somehow mated with a dying giraffe, their dying, abomination offspring would probably sound a bit like this.  Very back of the throat, seventh circle of hell stuff.  In my defense, I was sorely unprepared for a cockroach suddenly leaping over a foot in the air.  I think maybe it was a cricket.  Though I don't think I've ever see one even close to that big.

In any event, I wasn't taking any more chances.  I turned on the shower to flush him out and then capped his ass with a flyswatter.  Still not sure what it was.  It didn't scurry away from the light, though it did scurry when I turned on the water.   I can only think of it as some kind of mutant cockroach/cricket hybrid, and the world is better off for its destruction.
