The thing that's really bugging me is that the last time we saw the Eaten God's heart, it was not high enough up to kill anyone falling from it:

Or suspended by a chain, for that matter.

Jury's out on whether I'm upset about the death though. I think it depends on what happens as a result of it, how the People react and what changes are set in motion by it.

Cliche as it is, an Eaten hyena ending the suffering of the Eaten God and thereby slaying Sweetgrass Voice, possibly ending the generations of madness that have plagued the women of his once-people and led to his own name being Eaten, seems like a very fitting full circle for the mad, pathetic creature Ed once was. His body will go back to the People; and be devoured; and while he didn't -have- to die, it closes the book on Ed and the hyenas. Ursula never intended there to be a "To Be Continued" at the end of Digger.

But if it's just... "Oh, he's dead. Boo hoo." with no real consequence, I'll be pretty dissatisfied! Not that it'll stop me from getting the rest of the books, though.

Yeah, I just, I dunno. I think there are ways to avoid "to be continued's," without killing beloved characters. What bothers me is that I saw it coming, and I was really hoping Ursula/Digger would surprise me.

My opinion, like yours, is largely dependent on where she takes it from here regarding Ed's death. Not that it'll stop me from reading; I really want to see the Hag again.
