It’s been a year of madness! Age-old institutions redefined, favorite heroes gone away, crises of both health and faith in people close to us, while violence and prejudices seize our attention from diverse and sundry places throughout the world. But despite the collective collapse of reason, our family has been blessed with another year of stability and togetherness. Seeing Pluto up close was pretty awesome, too.
We lost Fred just as he was starting to warm up with us. He may not have been an official household member, but given how much time he spent with us, we considered him as part of the group.
While the Church got three new apostles this year, we got three new cockatoos! Our most junior addition is Cookie, formerly known as Scrapper because of the beak damage she received from parental abuse when she was a baby. But she isn’t a fighter; she’s gentle and kind-hearted.
Cookie’s brother Cracker joined us at the same time. More outspoken though less outgoing, Grandma Dawn is the person he likes the most.
While only a foster last year, Saffron became an official household member earlier this year, leading the way for our new cockatoo triumvirate. He loves to dance, calls out bad dogs seen and unseen, reminds us when it’s time to go to bed, and adores Eric.
The wacko hijinks of Posey continue! Her forays into defeating the evil anti-force of friction continue with nary a pause. We’re just happy she doesn’t vomit. Much.
Bonk has been very excited having more birds of her own feather around. She envisions them as something like the four eagles of the apocalypse, and the rest of us smile and nod when she’s paying attention. Her plans for a quorum of twelve cockatoos don’t have unanimous support, however.
Casey decided to enroll at the technical school for the upcoming year. As an engineering student, she can refine her mechanical skills and catch the attention of lots of boys at the same time. We’re all very happy for her.
We suggested Lottie could go to school too, and learn cosmetology so she can better manage the hair cares around here. She’s more interested in plastics, however, but at least that puts her and Casey in similar groups of friends.
First grade for Beatrix has been mostly a success. Her interest in cockatoos has led to school research projects and a Halloween costume. She wants everyone to know she made two snowmen this winter.
Reading has taken off for Enoch. He started Ender’s Game, but keeps getting distracted by other books along the way. His character in Terraria is named Dgrv. He was also baptized this year, and the rest of us have been very pleased with this important step of his.
The mysteries of dominant seventh chords have been calling to Fafnir, who has eagerly answered. He’s also gained a new interest in orchestration, hoping to gain the interest of more established ensembles as he shares his compositions with the world.
Klio was very excited by the achievement New Horizons made this summer, and is hoping the next flight in that direction will have room for her. She wants everyone to know that the word of the year is Yay!
As the political realm loses its collective mind, Elvis has been having more to write than ever before. Her only worry is that her imaginative powers might atrophy while the truthful things about candidates become indistinguishable from what she used to extrapolate from their statements.
What Freya has liked most about turning twelve is getting to join the Beehive class in the Young Women organization at church. She has proven adept at establishing boundaries for the rest of the household in her role as Senior Pet.
Ginny once said she wanted to be a mad scientist in the basement when she grew up. And while our basement is nothing exciting, that hasn’t stopped her from playing God as she unlocks the secrets of creating life, the universe, and everything!
Eric is still plugging along and making it up as he goes, relying on his sometimes fuzzy memory to keep everything in perspective. But the family is together, and that keeps him together.
We wish you all a Merry Christmas, and may the new year see everyone more sound in body and mind than ever before!
