Muse - Time is Running Out

“Just walk quickly, but don’t attract any attention,” he told her in a low whisper, pressing a hand against the small of her back to urge her on.

Ayn’s feet immediately picked up the pace, her eyes trained straight ahead as they began to weave their way through the crowd. “Are they following?”

Catoir didn’t respond at first, but she could feel him look away. He was so close to her that she could hear the rustle of his clothes over the chattering of city life. “They are. Just keep moving.”

She wasn’t afraid-couldn’t let herself be afraid in this moment. Don’t think: Just walk.

There was a gentle pressure on her back and Catoir began to move away. She hurried to return to his side, not wanting to get lost as the people surged around them. They ducked into a side alley, pausing for just a moment to catch their breath before they took off at a light jog. Catoir remained behind her the entire time, and she half wondered if he was acting as a guard.

Dance Dance Revolution - The Phantom of the Opera

The club was filled with too many bodies-no way that this was under the capacity. Too much burning skin all in close contact. Ayn struggled against them for a moment, then found a better path and slipped through it.

The music was pounding out over the speaker system. She could feel it through her entire body, forcing the footsteps on in time with the dark beat and her arms and torso moving with the melody. Everyone else was dancing, but she was just trying to cross the room.

A hand caught hers, and she looked up in a moment of panic to see an unfamiliar face. “Jinjur,” was all he said to her.

Ayn wrenched her arm away, clutching it against her chest as if she had been burned. “Stay away from me,” she muttered, but couldn’t hear herself over the music.

Hans Zimmer - He’s a Pirate (from Pirates of the Caribbean)

Zoné let out an excited whoop, recklessly stepping over the edge of the disheveled walls.

“W-watch out!” Jun cried, but he only laughed. His hands flailed about in a haphazard motion to try and keep his balance as he ran down. It was all he could do to keep his footing.

Abney Park - This Dark and Twisty Road

Jun clamped her arms around her chest. It was surprisingly warm for Eminence, but she was still shivering. “It’s okay. It’s okay-just keep walking.” Her hesitant voice did little to relieve the stress. It was too quiet, and so she was talking to herself to try and feel less alone.

There was a sound from behind her, and the girl jumped and turned around. Her eyes searched frantically for some sign of life, anything to know that she wasn’t alone. But when she managed to discern the sound of strained breathing, echoing through the alley all around her, Jun wasn’t too sure she wanted to have company at the moment.

“Lost, are we?”A voice wheezed and laughed from a balcony above her.

Jun squeaked, automatically launching into a sprint down the pavement. The light on the far end of the alley didn’t come any closer despite how far she had gone. Of course, going back wasn’t an option. She could still smell the smoke from all the little fires.

The laughter was far behind her, lost amidst the sound of her own heavy breathing and the blood pounding in her ears. She stumbled through a puddle, and continued on her way. “It’s okay. It’s okay-just keep walking. You’re almost here.”

It still seemed so long.

Beirut - Elephant Gun

Lysander sat on the edge of his bed, hands folded in his lap as he stared at the mess on his floor. Two half-packed bags spilled their contents about his apartment, evident of his frustration at being unable to even finish packing one.

He gave a sigh, stood up, and sat back down again.

When I run away, I will take you with me he had said. She had only laughed, called him silly, and he had left without her. Not on purpose, really.

And yet, through an amazing twist of fate, he found her again. In a city where he couldn’t leave. It was almost as if Eminence was mocking him for his previous attempt at a promise. The first time he couldn’t take her, and the second time he couldn’t leave. Lysander wasn’t entirely too sure which was more annoying.

He stood up and began to pace, kicking shirts and jeans out of the way. Six years, and she had been the only one that remained on his mind. So it had to be worth something that he had found her again, right? He just wasn’t the kind of person that could stand to remain in one place for long. So the stand-still that this brought about was eating on his nerves.

But that is what Lacryma was for. He would be able to leave with her this time. Both teams were doing what they could to ensure the fact that they would both be able to leave. Even if Lysander was technically not allowed to formally participate. What was bending a few minor rules then the company itself was breaking so many?

He would leave with her. And make sure that he didn’t make the same mistake of just running away again. He had grown since then. Not much, but he had grown.

Lady and the Lost Boys - I Like it When the Lines are Drawn

One of the things Kaito liked most about working in a bar and a dance club was the people. He enjoyed being surrounded by people all the time. Awake or asleep-it didn’t really matter to him. He woke up late most of the week, had a drink, and prepared to open again. He spent as much time as he could surrounded by people.

From people he was able to gain information. Tongues wagged when the drinks flowed. Was he trying to impress someone? Not really no, unless that really pretty blonde thing from a few days showed back up again-though something about her told him she wouldn’t return. Still he took his job seriously. Informant, barkeep, and dance club owner. All of them he took seriously. He was trying to impress without having anyone to really impress.

“You better be careful,” Rhys warned him once. “People who stick their noses too far into something often come out short.”

Kaito only laughed. “I’ll never be short.”

Sigur Rós - Starálfur

Rhys wrapped one arm around the shoulders of his siblings as they sat down on either side of him.

“You can almost see the stars tonight,” Liala commented, her breath coming out as a puff of white mist as she pointed up to the sky.

He tilted his head back, his own breath fogging up his glasses for a moment. “Because the power is down in this part of the city, the lights don’t drown out the sky.”

Lionel frowned, hugging his harms closer to his chest. He never did like cold weather. “Is this all you dragged us out here for?”

“Hush,” Liala said, unable to pull her gaze from the night sky. “It’s been so long since we’ve seen the stars. Can’t you just enjoy it a little?” Even though she was scolding him, a small smile curved the corners of her lips.

With a frown, her twin huddled into his sweatshirt and scarf, but didn’t say anything else.

Rhys gave them both a short squeeze before pulling his arms back, folding his hands in his lap and closing his eyes. Even if just for awhile, they could be at peace-sitting together, freezing, on the roof of a broken-down building.

Flogging Molly - Selfish Man

Kaito and Rhys were walking in silence back from the office. Rhys was never too sure what to say to the man-something about Kaito always left him speechless. Not always in a good way, either.

Kaito started whistling to himself, his hands shoved into the pocket of his jacket. He was doing his best to ignore the person beside him.

“I’m sorry,” Rhys said finally as they reached the door to Kaito’s bar. “For what happened.”

He shook his head, though if he meant it in a Don’t worry about it or No matter what you say, I can’t forgive you Rhys wasn’t too sure. Instead, he stepped into the bar and closed the door without inviting his friend inside.

Rhys stood on the stair for a moment, just looking at the closed door, willing it to open again so he wouldn’t have to make the motion himself. But it didn’t open, and so he sighed and turned away.

Shoving his hands into his pockets, he began to whistle the same tune that Kaito had been, and walked towards his apartment.

Nelly Furtado - All Good Things

They sat facing each other in the rail car, the heavy silence stretching for far too long. Lysander was gripping Ayn’s hand tightly in his own, and she kept her eyes closed and head lowered. On his other side, Zoné and Jun huddled together, whispering to each other but unable to bring a smile to the other’s face.

Across the way, Lio and Rhys flanked their sister. Lia’s head rested on her older brother’s shoulder, and her twin’s head rested on her shoulder. Her eyes were closed as well, but her breathing was labored and her face twisted with pain.

“We’re getting out of here,” Ayn said, finally looking up as the train started to move. “This is it.”

Zoné leaned away from Jun, twisting around to give Ayn a glance from around Lysander. “Are you going home?”

She shook her head, and he sat back on the seat.

“Someone needs to tell our parents… About Catoir…” he said in a whisper, and Jun reached out and took his hands in hers.

The Dubliners - Rocky Road to Dublin

Catoir didn’t show his surprise when Lysander sat down next to him. The older man was plucking idly at the strings of his fiddle, pretending to tune it though it was more like miming the melody that was playing from the speakers.

“You have such an ugly expression on your face,” he told Catoir, and he snorted.

“Thank you,” he replied.

Lysander sighed and set the instrument aside. “Don’t be so upset just because she can be happy.”

Catoir gave him an even stare over the rim of his glasses. Not a glare, not a look of surprise, just a stare. Without saying anything, he turned his gaze away again.

“You’re easy to read if someone knows what to look for. That’s why Ayn can read you so well.”

“I take it she’s been rubbing off on you then?”

Lysander laughed, looking across the room to the red-head. “I guess so.”
