Um, ew?

There were ladybugs in my dinner.

Since becoming a vegan, I've also begun buying organic produce. Now that the weather is nice I can begin buying locally (Verrill Farms! Woo!) but until recently, it's been Californian lettuce. I bought a bag of Earthbound Farms romaine heads, and tonight I opened it, washed it, chopped it, threw it in a bowl, and BEHOLD! It was crawling with ladybugs. Even itty bitty baby ladybugs that looked like they had just hatched.

This begs the question; is this gross? I am buying organic produce, so no pesticides and all around better for me. And ladybugs are cute. But I don't want them in my dinner. Also, the idea of eggs hatching on something taht I eat just gives me the creepy crawlies.

I threw all of it out, left a message with the company's customer service hotline, and will abstain from buying vegetables until I can get to the farmstand and buy fresh, local veggies. Man, if a few bugs are grossing me out, I doubt even want to imagine what I was putting into my body before I actually started paying attention...
