Title: Another Story for Another Day (IV)
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Cedric/Harry... sorta
Rating: G
Warnings: This author likes to skip blithely among the verb tenses.
Note: The name 'Dorea' is taken from the name of one of the possibilities of James Potter's mother. Since everyone recycles names in that family.

"Wait, we need a date?"

Dorea Potter paled as the realization of Hermione's words sunk in. A date. To a dance. But no one had asked her yet. Was she supposed to be asked or do the asking? Hermione seemed to sense her friend's confusion and let out a great huff.

"I'm not surprised no one's asked you yet. Boys - especially our age-" was that a dirty look shot at Ron? "-are intimidated by intelligence and talent. They're probably too scared to ask you."

"Hey, if you're so intimidating, Hermione, how about you go with me?" Ron asked before Dorea could respond, and that was a glare in Ron's direction.

"For your information I've already been asked." Hermione replied curtly, tossing her book in her bag and grabbing Dorea's hand. "Come on, we need to hurry to class - Don't you dare let him get away with asking you."

Dorea shot Ron an apologetic look over her shoulder as Hermione dragged her off. It would have been weird to go with Ron anyway - he was too much like a brother.

Later that day Dorea came to a decision.

"I'm going to ask him." she whispered to Hermione during History. "I'm the girl who lived, I'm one of the chosen for the school, I don't have to wait for a boy to ask me I can ask him first." even as she said this, Dorea had to wonder if she was attempting to convince herself or Hermione of this fact.

Of course, she didn't expect to have to make good on her promise. There were pleanty of times for them to meet but none of them private enough. And then she almost ran head-first into him at the Owlery.

Cedric's arms shot out to steady Dorea as she stumbled at his sudden appearance, teetering dangerously close to the steep stairway. Okay not that dangerously close compared to what else she had been through, but she was allowed to romanticize it a little bit.

They exchanged awkward 'sorry's and 'excuse me's before Cedric made his way past her, on his way out as she was on her way in. Dorea chewed at her bottom lip. This would probably be her only chance.

"Cedric!" she called when he was almost out of easy earshot, hoping for a moment that he wouldn't hear, that he'd keep going.

He stopped and looked up to her, curious and expectant.

"...Yes?"

Oh, oh, what was she supposed to say now?

"...I... I was wondering, um, if you had a date yet to the yule ball because I thought perhaps in the interest of house unity since we're both Hogwarts champions and all-" she could feel herself turning as scarlet as her scarf as she babbled.

"I'm sorry - I already have a date."

"...Oh."

...well. That was that. Cedric made a face that was... pained? Disappointed?

"I was certain someone had already asked you."

"I am apparently very intimidating." and very witty too, or at least acceptably witty, as Cedric laughed.

"You are that, Miss Potter. ...Though, I am sorry. And maybe we could still have a dance anyway. You know, in the interest of promoting inter-house unity." the grin Cedric gave her made Dorea's knees feel weak.

"Y-yeah. I'll... I'll see you there." Dorea called, feeling like she was floating as she made her way back inside the enclosed space of the Owlery. Perhaps this year wouldn't turn out so bad after all.
