[Amazingly, the phone rings the first afternoon. Arkady has no fear, and if there's one thing the gods have taught her is that it really does take all kinds. And the Antichrist was acting up again.]

Hullo! This is Arkady Collins, one of the locals. I have a Jeep that badly needs looked at by someone who knows what they're doing. I can't even get it to the mechanic's in these drifts, so coming to me would be brilliant. My ex left all sorts of tools and parts about my garage that would likely be useful if you don't have your own.

[Which he might not, she thinks even as she chatters. Men coming out of prison start with nothing, which is one of the reasons they tend to go back. Desperation in winter is an ugly thing, and though she does not pity him, she keeps thinking, 'tis the season.]

I can come have a look at it tomorrow morning. I'll tell you if I'm able to repair it. I don't have any references.

[Dick has his own hard-bitten rules of honor. He'll steal, all right, food or cash, but he won't lie or commit fraud. He hopes he can find a real, steady job for the season at the ranch up the hill, but a second job will mean a little extra padding in his dwindling cash reserves.]

That's all right, love, neither did my boyfriend and it never stopped him. The Antichrist is a surplus Jeep. I'll pay for any parts or extra tools.

I'm on Main Street. [She gives the address.] I'll be the crazy bird out in front with the big cauldron of homemade cider.

I'll be over there at ten-thirty. I probably won't be able to start work tomorrow but I can figure out how much work it's going to take in an hour.

Right then. That will work--and perhaps you can help me eat some of these eggs. I've got twice as much as I needed for nog and they're too fresh to leave sit.

Ma'am. No offense, but I don't need charity. I work for everything I get.

Pish! It's not charity, you'll be doing me a favor. Besides, it's work by itself getting through these drifts.

[It feels like a hand-out to Dick but maybe he's hungry enough to take it even if it is.]

All right, Ms. Collins. Tomorrow at 10:30. I'll see you then.

[She doesn't mention that she also is too used to cooking for two, and there's only one now. Except when Nathan came over.]

Right then, I'll be seeing you!
