He is everything a little boy ought to be. He knows his numbers (un, deux, trois) and colors (rouge, bleu, vert) and delights in catching lizards, frogs and all manner of jungle life. He brings them home to show his Maman, who brushes the dirt out of his hair and smiles.
His Maman teaches him many things, like how to make nets and how to run from the whispers. She teaches him how to move through the jungle without a sound and all the places he must never go. She kisses his skinned knees and dries tears from his clear blue eyes.
At night, she holds him close as they watch the moon rise over the ocean, hums a lullaby into his soft blond hair as he drifts off to sleep.
