Just Muse Me: The Ties That Bind

Ten of your most life changing moments.

01. "The First Commandment"
Jack didn’t sign up because he was a patriot, well, not really. He did like America and thought it was great, but he joined the Air Force because he wanted to fly. That and there weren’t many options for a kid in Minnesota fresh out of high school with no desire to go to college. School had never been Jack’s thing. What he wanted was to get out of the small town he lived in and see the world. There was more out there, he knew that and he wanted to see it for himself. The Air Force did that.

02. "Brief Candle"
She looked stunning in her wedding dress. Jack rarely found himself at a loss for words, but looking at Sarah while the preacher droned on, he was completely stunned. He wondered what she was doing with him. He was just an Air Force guy and here was this beautiful amazing woman agreeing to marry him. Was he that lucky? Maybe he was. Maybe all those cynical beliefs about how the world worked were wrong. Maybe he was wrong. It was a possibility when Sarah was willing to marry him. This was good. Jack could feel it. Lord, she was pretty.

03. "Cold Lazurus"
They were right outside, him and Sarah. They were just in the garden. He actually had leave. It was supposed to be a good thing. They got to be a family, like they were supposed to be. Instead, he was sitting in numb horror, Sarah sobbing next to him. It was his fault, Jack knew that. All of this, the paramedics, the cops, Sarah’s tears, this was all his fault. It was his gun. One he stupidly left out. Why hadn’t he locked it up? Why wasn’t the safety on? How could he have been so stupid? All his fault.

04. "Children of the Gods"
Though an unknown piece of alien technology which no one knew how it worked was a daunting prospect, Jack didn’t care. He’d go through The Gate and hopefully die on the mission. What did he have to return to? Sarah was leaving him, his son was dead - all his fault - and he was retired. There was nothing left for him. Death would be preferable to the sense of numbness that had swallowed him whole. So he went through with the annoying scientist expecting never to come back. He did come back, however, with a slightly better outlook than before. Slightly.

05. "Stargate SG-1"
Standing at the base of the ramp, Jack checked over his team. Teal’c was looking stoic as ever with his traditional expressionless Jaffa expression. Daniel was pushing his glasses up his nose and trying to get his helmet to fit right. Carter was strapping on her P-90. It was a pretty typical pre-mission view. Behind them, the Gate was dialing up. Soon they’d be off to another world, probably fight some more Goa’uld, and then come home a little beat up but none the worse. He rocked back on his heels, the only outward sign he was excited about this.

06. "Upgrades"
Everything just stopped. He could hear his heart pounding in his ears, the alarms blaring around them, but everything was focused on her. Leave her behind? He couldn’t. She was Carter, his brilliant scientist, capable second-in-command and more important to him than anyone had any right to be. He couldn’t leave her to die. And she knew it. The way she was looking at him, she understood every reason for why he had just tried to break down the damn shield separating them. Of course she got it. She was Carter. She could understand everything, even him. So, he stayed.

07. "Abyss"
Daniel was back, dressed in white and with no shoes. That struck Jack as weird. Why didn’t he have shoes? Of course the idea of talking to Daniel, who was dead, while trapped in a Goa’uld spaceship was also weird, but lower on the scale for Jack. Over the years, his definition of weird had changed. His ethics had too. Daniel had the power to save him and yet he just sat there talking to him. Did he notice how he wore white, while Jack wore black? White meant Daniel was saved, but in black Jack was going to die.

08. "New Order Part 2"
He was The Man now. Jack sat back in his desk and looked at the wide expanse of wood with a sense of trepidation. He was The Man. What was he supposed to do as The Man? Okay, so there was a list of duties he had and boy was it a list, but that stuff was scheduled. What did he do when one of the unexpected situations that could only happen at the SGC popped up? He was supposed to make the orders for everyone. Because he was The Man. This was going to take some getting used to.

09. "Moebius Part 2"
Leaving the SGC behind had only ever popped into Jack’s head when he thought about retirement. He imagined himself a bit like Hammond, working in the Mountain until he retired. It was a good plan too. He got to see his team most every day and even behind a desk things were exciting enough. It was a great job. Except now the President wanted him for another. Jack had tried to say no, really, but in the end it was pointless. He was going to replace Hammond again. Well, at least he could count on the desk chair being comfortable.

10. "The Ark of Truth"
It was over. There was an odd sense of… well of boredom in that. Jack knew logically that one day there’d be another intergalactic menace to put Earth in danger. He also knew that the SGC was there to stop them. Earth was safe for a bit. There was still Atlantis to deal with and the dangers of the Pegasus Galaxy, but those guys seemed just as capable. They’d do even better with Carter leading them. He could probably retire now. Actually, that was a really good idea. If he was quick, he could retire before another threat showed up.
