[CHARACTER INFO]
CHARACTER NAME: Maxine Hunkel, Cyclone.
FANDOM: DC Comics (JSA and JSA All-Stars).
CHRONOLOGY: Between JSA All-Stars #7 and JSA #40 & 41 (August/September 2010). These take place after Blackest Night, as far as I know -- but it's sort of sketchy, considering DC is lame about differentiating when things occur and the span of time in between one event and the next.
CLASS: Hero!
SUPERHERO NAME: Cyclone!
ALTER EGO: Maxine Hunkel, Harvard student.
BACKGROUND:
Maxine's initial introduction gives the reader a look into her day-to-day life. In class, she corrects her professor (...at Harvard) at great length and in her theatre class, she explains why they should choose the musical she likes to perform -- though enthusiastic as she stands on stage pouring her heart out, her classmates hardly look thrilled. Quite the opposite in fact. In her dorm room, her roommate of barely two weeks is transferring to another room, looking like she can't leave soon enough. At lunch, she sits alone, looking out the cafeteria window, though there is another table nearby... where the students appear to be laughing at her expense.
Following this, she is shown standing atop a building. The reader is led to believe that she means to commit suicide. In the distance, Power Girl and Mr. Terrific are discussing that her grandmother (and the caretaker of the JSA Brownstone), Ma Hunkel, mentioned that she 'only had atypical depression,' and they wait to see what she plans to do. Maxine takes a step off the top of the building, as if she intends to kill herself with the words "it's time to try... defying gravity." Closing her eyes, she falls -- then floats. Flying, even! This is Maxine's first time attempting to use her metahuman ability in such a way, implying that if she did fall and die, she wouldn't have minded it.
She is mentioned as having started a fanclub for the JSA member Stargirl (Courtney Whitmore) during her junior year in high school, so she was 16-17 and Courtney, at the time, was 14-15, which really only makes Maxine look more pitiful. To her, Stargirl was an idol because she was so good and kind and everyone seemed to like her. Sort of the opposite of herself, though she isn't terrible or cruel. Courtney was the way she imagined herself to be, wanted to be, but didn't have the means to become without superpowers. To her, Courtney was an inspiration and did help her through some tough times (as idols and fictional characters can do). It was mentioned that though she had started a JSA fanclub, no one had shown up to her meetings, but she still went to all of them, anyway. Depressing.
Prior to her appearance, she was apparently kidnapped by T.O. Morrow as a child. The details have not been given (and perhaps might never be), but whatever he did to her resulted in her metahuman ability and has been debated by those around her that her awkwardness came from that moment, as well.
After Maxine's initial introduction, she has been involved in most every major battle from 2006 onwards in the DCU and in particular, the crossover with Kingdom Come, though her inclusion in these battles has rarely been anything of great importance (though it could be argued otherwise). She is usually shown more as someone using her abilities for support than anything else, though when she's particularly enraged she seems to be more likely to hit hard.
When the JSA split, she sided with the JSA "All-Stars" (which she named when taunted with being referred to as a JSA reject). Presumably she chose them because Stargirl and others closer to her age were in this group. Rather than a dislike for the older members, it was most likely because she felt more comfortable around these people. Since her time in the JSA and joining the All-Stars, she seems to have matured and become more comfortable with the members of both groups, talking a little less than she had prior.
PERSONALITY:
Maxine suffers from depression, but wouldn't you if you had no friends and no one ever listened to you or understood you? ...well, maybe. She's friendly enough, but part of Maxine's problem with making friends is that though she talks a lot, she is still relatively shy. She doesn't entirely know how to approach people and being someone who has never had any friends (at least until joining the JSA), she isn't entirely sure of what is the social norm or what to say, not say, or how to say it. She tends to get terribly nervous and talk a lot (for example
here, upon meeting Power Girl and Mr. Terrific -- Maxine only stops talking when Power Girl puts her hand over her mouth), even when she isn't nervous. Maxine can go on and on and on and on without even getting to the point she meant to make, sometimes even forgetting it entirely and other times repeating it several times just worded slightly different than the time prior.
In being anti-social, she has developed her own coping mechanisms, such as being a geek. She like to sew (and is excellent at it), in addition to being obsessed with musical theatre and theatre in general, as well as films and books of most every sort. Maxine's friends for the longest time have been fictional, rather than real and tangible and it can show in how she's so emotionally connected to books or plays and how she describes them so fervently.
When she becomes more comfortable around people, she talks a little less (and at a little slower pace). There's no doubt that Maxine is friendly (if not overly so), and if you can get past her turbo-talking, she's the kind of person that is very likable and 'friend for life' material. At that point, she also can be a little bolder and unafraid to speak her mind or stand up for those that she cares about, even if it means being a little tough on those people. It's what she'd expect from them, after all. She obviously can be over-emotional and scared (particularly because she is diagnosed as depressive), but she's a tough cookie and can hold out.
She is also a genius, though she doesn't appear to be so and has maintained an A-average throughout her school career, but that can also be attributed to her lack of friends and spending a great deal of her free time both reading and studying.
POWER:
The DCU wiki states it as "Aerokinesis"
here.
Since her page's creation, she has shown to basically use wind to do anything it possible could be used for. When particularly enraged or focused, she's capable of wind speed and power beyond
the Beaufort Scale. She appears to be able to trigger such force consciously now and take very little effort to do so.
She is capable of using the wind to help her fly, as well as use it on the entire JSA (as well as the current All-Stars group) and simultaneously control them and attack, as well.
[CHARACTER SAMPLES]
COMMUNITY POST (FIRST PERSON) SAMPLE: Uh, hello? Hey. Hi. This thing's pretty nifty. [She swings it around and here face is blurred, as if she thinks there is a second camera on her somewhere and that's what is posting. Or, maybe, she's just a little nervous.] The technology is pretty sophisticated, but it seems really simplified. I was really worried that I had actually come to the future, but I guess I haven't. That's a relief! [She laughs a little sheepishly. She's clearly trying to stay calm.] I'm, um, Cyclone. Well, that's my superhero name. It's not my real name. I'm a member of the JSA All-Stars. I'm not sure how much that means to anyone, actually, but I really hope that sounds familiar and someone can help me because I'm really out of ideas on how to get back home. I tried talking to the people that I met when I came in and they sorta just dismissed me and actually gave me this look like I was the one that was annoying, even though they're the ones that brought me here! The nerve of those people! So anyway, I really have to get home soon before grandma worries about me and I have homework I need to f--
--oh god! [Her expression really starts to head toward panic now. Maxine grabs a bit of her hair and tugs on it, running some of the red strands through her fingers, occasionally spinning it around and letting it curl a little before going straight again and starting all over.] It's all due tomorrow and I barely got started because I was really busy with all that superhero world-saving stuff, right? So I have so much to do and it's all just sitting there, unfinished! I wonder if I can get an extension? I hope I can get an extension. I really could use an extension. I don't want to fail! [This goes on for a while as she paces back and forth, back and forth and eventually, she just covers her mouth. There's a moment of silence and she focuses back on the camera. Slowly, she removes her hands and lets her arms fall back to her sides and she frowns deeply.]
This... this sucks.
LOGS POST (THIRD PERSON) SAMPLE: Maxine was more than prepared to be alone in a strange, foreign place but it didn't stop her from immediately panicking. She'd grown stronger over the past several months and more confident, but it still didn't change the fact that she was in a city (the) that appeared to be parallel to New York City. Big, loud, fast, and scary for someone on their own, especially someone with anxiety and self-confidence issues. Standing around looking nervous would even make her a prime target for mugging! And she really didn't want to be mugged. Sure, she didn't exactly have much on her at the moment considering she was in her superhero costume, but that might only make it worse! If she didn't have a purse or a wallet to hand over some guy with a knife would be tempted to use it on her or--
--she knew she was panicking internally. And she knew she had to let a little of it out, so she paced back and forth, back and forth and thought about what Power Girl would do, what Magog would do, what Green Lantern and Wildcat and her idol and closest friend, Stargirl would do. It all led to the same answer: don't panic.
It was easy to say that when you weren't already spazzing out, though, wasn't it? It was so obvious, but she couldn't bring herself to push past it. At least not yet. Motormouthing the situation quietly to herself was probably the best solution -- it would get some of the stress out.
She begins to walk forward with little steps, hardly lifting her feet off the ground and scuffing the sidewalk as she does so, focusing on a point in the distance to head toward, Maxine whispers to herself. "Okay, so, I'm stuck in another world. Sort of like that Superman who got stuck in another world... and he came to us! To the JSA, so he wasn't alone. And I'm in a city that looks like New York City, so I might be in New York and probably am in New York, so if... if I head toward Manhattan I can go to the Brownstone or whatever's left of it or rebuilt or however it is in this world and I can find this world's JSA." A soft, happy little mmm! sound comes from her lips, as if she's just solved a great mystery.
Her feet move a little faster, like she's eager to get where she's going and not just headed toward nowhere now. There's a goal. "Okay, okay. So that's settled. I'll head to the Brownstone and if no one is there or there is no Brownstone, I can post using that thingie they gave me and I can try to find someone I know or someone that can help me and if no one else responds, I'll just fly away." Where to? Her hands begin to fidget with the hem of her dress as she walks and ignores the sounds about her. "Oh, okay. I'll go to Metropolis and Gotham and, and wherever. And if I still find no one," Finally, a whirlwind kicks up under her feet and she's lifted off the ground, eyes darting around trying to find familiar territory, "Then I'll act like a JSA member. And I'll find my way home." Confidence rising, she heads off toward Manhattan, hoping for the best.
FINAL NOTES ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER:
She's a relatively new character in the DCU, so most of her history is group history. Often times she is only shown in the background -- in the last
JSA Special, she was in the background for maybe four panels out of 56 pages and said less than ten words, which isn't much for a chatty character like her.
Also, this is basically the same app as last time. She will remember being in the City, as brief as it was.
