Summary: Hermione sees Neville in a new light.
As far as Hermione Granger is concerned Lavender Brown is insane and Ronald Weasley is an annoying prat. She can’t figure out why Lavender takes such great delight in pawing at Ron and sucking his tonsils out whenever she has the misfortune of being in the same room as they are. She can’t even really begin to understand why Lavender would want such a boy who has the emotional capacity of a teaspoon. The only logical explanation that Hermione can come up with is that Lavender Brown is a complete and total nutter.
Since she can’t stomach the revolting displays of affection between Lavender and her former best friend, Hermione hides herself in the library as much as possible. She’s been lucky enough to find a virtually hidden alcove where she can do her homework in peace and quiet. It’s a lovely place of sanity since Lavender hasn’t found it and she hasn’t dragged Ron by to torment Hermione.
“Hullo Hermione.”
“Neville,” Hermione greets her friend with a smile.
“I’ve been searching all over for you.”
“Sorry I’ve been trying to avoid the places where Ron and Lavender might be.”
“I can’t blame you,” Neville responds with a grimace.
“What can I do for you?” Hermione asks.
“I need some help with my arthimancy homework.”
Hermione smiles at her friend and she helps him with his homework. She finds it pleasant working with Neville, especially since he doesn’t expect her to do his homework for him. Instead he just needed help understanding a certain principle that will allow him to complete his homework. They fall into a companionable silence once she’s helped him. The only sound coming from their hidden alcove is the sound of their quills scratching on their parchments.
However dinnertime quickly approaches so they pack their things up and make their way down to the Great Hall. They end up having a conversation about their families and Neville makes Hermione laugh with tales of his family and how they dealt with their fears that he might have been a squib. He stops her just before they enter the Great Hall.
“I’ve had a nice time Hermione, d’you mind if I meet you there tomorrow?”
“Of course not.”
Neville blushes before he leans forward and kisses her on the cheek. He mumbles something that sounds like Ron’s a bloody fool before he rushes into the Great Hall. Hermione stands there at a loss for words with her hands pressed against her cheek. She sees Neville in a brand new light and for once she doesn’t feel as hurt or betrayed over Ron’s choice of Lavender for a girlfriend.
“Miss Granger, might I suggest you quit daydreaming and join your House for dinner?” Snape coldly asks as he sweeps by her.
“Yes Professor,” Hermione automatically responds as she rushes in.
She finds her place at the table and listens as Harry and Ginny tell her about everything she missed while she was hidden away in the library. When Lavender starts to paw at Ron, she looks at Neville who rolls his eyes at her and they both break into laughter. Hermione feels better than she has since Lavender and Ron started dating.
