Capturing the Gryffindor know-it-all had been an easy task for the Death Eaters, especially after the death of Albus Dumbledore. The Order of the Phoenix seemed to have grown lax in their grief for their leader. Although Minerva McCongall had assumed the role of leader, she did not possess the charisma that Dumbledore had, and she found it very difficult to lead the different personalities that made up the Order. Also Dumbledore’s death had fractured the Order, which had lead to people that had been loyal only to Dumbledore leaving the Order with his death. There just weren’t enough people to make sure that Hermione’s house in a muggle neighbourhood was safe, which meant that when the Death Eaters had attacked her at her parents’ middle class home, she was alone with only her parents. Hermione had been forced to rely on the knowledge that she had gained from her own readings and what Harry had taught her, but she was outnumbered five to one. She fought bravely and even managed to bring down one of the Death Eaters but the fight went out of her when the room was lit with the sickly green light of the killing curse when her parents were murdered. The Death Eaters had laughed as they watched her fall to her knees clutching her wand, unable to cast any more to defend herself in her horror.
And now it was up to Bellatrix Lestrange to break the girl to find out what information she knew that the Death Eaters could use to finally bring down the Order of the Phoenix, and with it Harry Potter. The Dark Lord had originally wanted Severus Snape to break Hermione because he had thought it amusing to see her broken at the hands of someone whom she still implicitly trusted, even after Snape had murdered Dumbledore. However, Bellatrix had pleaded to be allowed the privilege of breaking the young witch since she still did not trust Snape and she feared that he would somehow release Hermione or hide the information on the Order from the Dark Lord.
As Bellatrix stood in front of the younger witch, her lips curved into a vicious smile that made the younger woman shiver in fear. There was something frightening in the way that Bellatrix started to prepare for her work as she laid down several instruments on the small table that she had conjured. Hermione was terrified of what Bellatrix had done, especially since she remembered hearing how the woman had caused Neville’s parents to go insane with her torture. She was shocked when the older witch merely conjured up a comfortable chair and saw down in it after placing the final item on the table, a wickedly sharp dagger. Bellatrix sat in silence as she appraised the younger witch and the silence seemed to ring in Hermione’s ears before Bellatrix finally spoke.
“So you are supposed to be the brightest witch of your age?” Bellatrix asked with a slightly mocking tone.
”H-how did you know that?”
”Doesn’t anyone from the Order miss their precious pet werewolf?” Bellatrix asked as Hermione’s eyes widened.
”What did you do to him?” Hermione demanded.
”I don’t believe that you’re in a position to demand anything of me, but if you ask me nicely I will tell you about how I broke the overgrown puppy.”
”N-no,” Hermione stated as she paled.
“Oh yes, little girl,” Bellatrix replied with a laugh. “But that will cost you.”
”What do you want from me?”
”Knowledge,” Bellatrix simply stated as she picked up the dagger and whispered a spell so that the blade glowed blue.
“I won’t tell you anything no matter what you do to me,” Hermione bravely said.
”I was hoping that you would say that,” Bellatrix said as she smirked at her.
The older woman stood up and smoothed out her robes before she moved so that she was standing in front of Hermione. The younger witch strained at the ropes that held her down. Bellatrix wielded the blade as her dark eyes flashed in pleasure and she slowly traced the tip of the dagger along Hermione’s jaw line causing the younger witch to tremble in fear. The dagger’s tip seemed to burn as it made a path along her jaw line.
”Are you sure that this is what you want?” Bellatrix asked.
”I won’t betray Harry or my friends.”
”I admire your loyalty, it’s such a pity that it is misplaced. Your werewolf was the same way but I eventually broke him too, just like I will break you little girl,” Bellatrix promised.
