The Glen Beck Project:

Aug 04, 2009 17:05

This was actually written Sunday night, but my computer crashed and I was too tired to do anything about it at the time. Thank the lord for autosave.

me: Patrick Dempsey has his own fragrance now. UNSCRIPTED. lol.
sam: It should be called "Can't Buy Me Dignity."

ANYWAY. So I officially have a new project to work on. The Glen Beck Project.

I went out to breakfast this morning with my father. Henceforth referred to as "Soul Patch," because as a semi mid-life crisis he has decided to grow a soul patch, and it unnerves me. So, Soul Patch and I are eating our omelets and somehow we get on the topic of Glen Beck. Soul Patch is a huge fangirl of Beck. After months of mocking me for my Twitter, he actually considered getting one just because Beck did. Now I’ve never actually watched Beck’s show, but the fact that my father loves him combined with the fact that his show airs on FOX, leads me to believe that I probably won’t agree with too much of what he has to say. However, Soul Patch challenged me to give his show a fair chance, and since I can’t turn down a challenge, here I am.

I decided to take things one step further and turn this into a project for myself. I want to look at conservative versus liberal media, and compare the two of them. Starting tomorrow I’m going to watch Beck’s show every day for a week. I’m also going to watch Countdown with Keith Olbermann all week and see how the two of them measure up to one another. (dutchtulips, I choose Keith's show just for you!) I realize that looking at just two shows isn't a HUGE comparison of the liberal versus conservative media, but I can't manager more than 2 extra hours of TV a day! That'll have to do for now.

This isn’t just to pit the right and the left against each other. I’m honestly curious to see how they compare. To see which topics they each choose to cover, what sort of facts they back up their arguments with, etc. It also might be good for me to practice looking at things from an unbiased point of view. What with the journalism major and all, I thought it might be a good idea. ;)

So the plan is to study them both for the week, compare them, and then write an entry about the whole thing over at my new blog. So, keep your eyes peeled because I’m going to be bugging you guys for feedback once it's posted.

ETA:
Since writing this, I've watched two episodes of Beck's show, and I think I did right by choosing Countdown to compare it with. My impressions of Glen Beck so far? His personality leaves a little something to be desired. I think a lot of his jokes are mean spirited, and most of them made me roll my eyes. But I'm not trying to judge his social graces. As far as his reporting skills and the news, I really liked the fact that he questions everything and stresses the fact that individuals can make a difference. However, he's a bit of a doomsday-er. He has this really pessimistic way of looking at things that I definitely don't enjoy. And that's what I've got for now. I've put together a few ideas for the article so far, and I'm looking forward to writing it!
