[ Making their way from the Garden Lobby to the Fisherman's Horizon inn are a boy and a girl, each with a course catalog tucked under their arms and matching confused faces. Their bodies are turned into each other slightly, enough to let onlookers know that they're friends. The girl's eyes keep darting about, whether in amazement or sheer surprise ( Read more... )

[Yukio's actually on his way back to the Garden from the inn. He's got a briefcase and a few books on him, like he's off to work in the library, when he sees a pair of... cadets, probably? They're not the first people he's met who seem a little... well, too interested in their surroundings to not be new.

In any case, he approaches the pair with a smile on his face.]

Nice place, isn't it?

[Riku stands with his hands shoved in his pockets, taking in the surroundings and making observations about them in his mind, all while keeping an eye on Kairi. When Yukio approaches, he only gives a nod. Being new must have been plastered all over their faces.]

It's not so bad looking. Doesn't exactly beat home though.

[ Kairi sends Riku a frown. Be polite, biffle! WHAT WOULD YOUR MOTHER SAY. ]

The islands are pretty tough to beat; it's good to smell the ocean, though! When Garden takes off again, we probably won't get to for a while...so we'd better enjoy it.

[ To Yukio, she offers a friendly smile. ]

I'm Kairi, and this is Riku. Who are you?

[He glances from Riku and then to Kairi, laughing a little as he does so.]

I assume you both lived right along the water? That must have been a great environment to grow up in.

[At the introductions, he nods.]

Yukio Okumura--I'm an instructor here. It's nice to meet you both.

[He looks away from Kairi after that frown, subtly straightening himself. She's got a point.]

Yeah, we did, on a set of islands. It was pretty fun.

[An instructor? He's pretty young looking.] Good to me you, Yukio. What do you teach here, if I can ask.

Nice to meet you, Mister Yukio! [ A pause. Then, feeling vaguely awkward: ] Should we call you Instructor...?

No need to be so formal normally, but I'd appreciate it if you'd still use the title in the classroom.

[He pauses for a moment, considering.]

Then again, I don't think I'll be seeing either of you in your first quarter anyway. I teach status effects and diseases as well as the battlefield medicine internship--both of which require prerequisite courses.

[He nods.]

I hope you don't mind me asking, but you seem a little young to teach.

Battlefield medicine...? [ Kairi's interest is piqued! She was considering that specialization. She'll let Riku's question go first, though, since Yukio does seem young, if mature. ]

[Ah. That.

It's a query Yukio's run into enough--back home and here--that it earns the duo a weary smile.]

I've completed all of the necessary courses and credentials to teach here, and I'm honored that the administration is allowing me to do so. [He reaches inside his coat and produces an ID card, holding it out to them. Sure enough, it lists him both as a SeeD and instructor.] This will be my first time teaching here at the Garden, but I've been instructing others back home as well.

[He can tell what that expression is about. Poor guy must get hounded all the time about his age.]

Well, you certainly must be accomplished, Yukio. Good luck on getting used to teaching around here.

[ She feels a twinge of awkwardness at Riku's use of Yukio's first name, as if the obvious sign that his youth was often questioned made expressions of respect count more. But then he seemed close enough to Riku's age, and a boy as well, and she figured things might be different. ]

What did you teach back home? And, if you could...tell me more about the battlefield medicine major, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks. [He nods his head at Riku and then turns his attention to Kairi.] I taught anti-demon pharmacology. [Realizing how odd this may sound, he adds on some further explanation.] I was at a school that trains exorcists.

[Whether or not that actually makes it more understandable, he's... not entirely sure. Regardless, he presses onward.]

Is there anything specific you wanted to know more about? In general, the battlefield medicine major here has you learning both recovery magic as well as more traditional forms of medicine.
