[ Raven only arrived recently, and still doesn't know what to do with herself. Her days thus far have consisted of aimless walking around the Garden, choosing her classes, eating, sleeping, and refusing to interact with anyone around her if she could help it. It's getting a bit... tiring

[ In Jade's mind, knitting needles are equated to a tool you can use to stab ogres in the eye with. Or they would be, were she a normal Homestuck kid.

As it stands, she's not even sure what they do. Standing and watching. ]

Are you stabbing that stuff?

[Is... she talking to her? Raven lifts her head to see, and then turns her attention back to her knitting.]

...I'm making a scarf.

D'you always have to poke the yarn?

[ Really, she's just curious. She's never seen someone make a scarf before, even though she loves her own. ]

[brokenfirebird]

[...poking it? Has this girl never seen someone knit before? Raven glances up, mildly curious but not allowing it to show on her face.]

The needles are used to hold the stitches, and to make new ones.

Oh. So you can't stab anyone in the eye with it?

[brokenfirebird]

[Looks a bit bewildered. WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO DO THAT.]

...you can. But don't.

Oh.

[ Sitting down next to her, watching curiously. ]

How do you remember where you are?

[brokenfirebird]

It's only a ribbed scarf - I don't need to remember where I am. I'm finished when I think it's long enough.

I've never seen a scarf made before, just seen 'em in the store.

[brokenfirebird]

[Never? Really? But... everyone knows how to knit, right? Even Gaius, who taught her everything she knows about crafts. Raven contemplates showing her how, but it takes her a while to come up with a conclusion.]

I could show you. Then you could make your own.

[supbroski]

[ Whoa. ]

You mean...do something like that?

[ Vaguely points at the scarf. Jade has never been domestic in her life, and even though this seems highly uncool, she kind of thinks that it might be fun to learn. After all, she could make a scarf for Bro or something. And who knew when she'd need to know how to knit or die trying?

Okay no she actually thought this was really cool. ]

[A nod.] Yes. It's simply a matter of pulling loops of yarn through other loops.

Look.

Push the right needle in. Wrap the loose yarn around clockwise. Pull the new loop through the old one, and take the old one off the left needle. Repeat.

That's a knit stitch. It quickly becomes automatic.

That seems easy enough.

[ She watches carefully. Okay well maybe it's not so easy. ]

How'd you get 'em all so tiny?

You tug on the loose end of yarn, so that the loop is snug on the needle. With practice, it becomes consistent.

...the other basic stitch is "purl." Here.

[She demonstrates the purl stitch in a similar manner, still avoiding eye contact.]

These names are weird, like, who wakes up in the morning and says "I'm gonna purl today?"

Nobody. They would say they were knitting. Purl is just a stitch used while knitting.

[Said with a completely straight face, practically as a monotone. It's not clear whether she's annoyed or indifferent.]
