Oh, a holiday ... what kind of holiday is it? The decorations I've seen so far have all been really strange.

Well, they would be. Halloween is a sort of festival of the dead and glorifies scary things like bats and witches. Kids dress up in costumes and go to their neighbors' houses to collect candy.

...The costume thing is supposedly to scare off any evil spirits that might be lurking about.
