CHAPTER SIX - THE FEMININE MYSTIQUE

Rogue sat against the jagged wall, her hands and feet still trapped together by the manacles now attached in the front.  Mystique was leading a trail of Brotherhood members in and out of the room.  None of them looked at Rogue who crouched anxiously.  None of them said anything to her either.  Only Mystique’s voice could be heard giving orders.  The sound of it booming and echoing inside Rogue’s tiny cave made it seem horrible.

“I hope you can appreciate all the trouble he’s going through on your behalf.”  Mystique said once all the others had left and the door was shut.

Marie scooted up along the wall and peered over in Mystique’s direction.  She stood leaning against a metal tub.  There was steam rising right above where water had been put in by the 'visitors'.

“If it was me I would have just starved you until you agreed…”  Mystique looked at the fresh bath and skimmed the tips of her fingers along its surface.  “… or beaten you to within an inch of your life.”  Rogue strained against her cuffs.  Mystique looked up at her and Rogue’s worried eyes flew open even wider.  Marie wondered where she was going with this.

The younger woman fidgeted and Mystique suddenly grinned.  “Just some food for thought.”  she said and straightened before noiselessly exiting the room.

Pyro came to Rogue’s door just as Mystique was leaving it.  He noticed she had a somewhat triumphant smile on her face, but when she spotted him it vanished and was replaced by a sneer.

“What did you just do?”  Pyro asked.  He crossed his arms over his chest and peered around Mystique, relieved to see that the cell door was closed.

“Nothing that didn’t need to be done.”  She stated simply.  John felt his last bit of patience abandon him.

“Why are you always on that girl?!  Like at the mansion.  You didn’t have to knock her out to get her on the plane!”

“Hey, don’t you start that shit with me!”  Mystique started yelling as well and she changed shape to take on Pyro’s own appearance.  A portion of her shoulder and leg remained the same.  “I was here long before you ever were!  And let’s not forget how your Girl Wonder over there was the one who got Magneto locked up, Toad dead, and me in the hospital!”  The real John blinked.

“I think you give her more credit than she deserves.”  Mystique shifted from Pyro’s shape, pointing and screaming, to Rogue as a 16-year-old girl, full hoodie and all.

“And I don’t think you give me enough.”  John felt something within him stir to see Rogue the same as when he’d first laid eyes on her.

“Cut the shit Mystique!”  He yelled abruptly.  Mystique rolled Rogue’s brown eyes before they changed back to her natural yellow.

“I’m just saying that you sprung the mission on me a little fast, that’s all.  I mean, you told me we were only there to do recon and then…”

“We had to speed up the timeline.”  John interrupted.

Mystique raised an eyebrow, but Pyro just sighed, growing rapidly more irritated with the course this conversation was taking.

“Ah ha…”  Mystique drawled out.  “So now you’re treating princess in there,” she motioned to Rogue’s door, “to the royal treatment while I still don’t get even the smallest bit of respect that someone of my…”

“Respect?!”  Pyro screamed, cutting her off completely.  He straightened up desperately trying to get his temper under control.

“You give the Feds our location, and now you’re taunting someone completely fucking defenseless, and you think that you deserve respect?!”  Pyro gave Mystique a sharp jab to the chest bone.  Mystique was completely taken aback, stunned by the audacity of his gesture.

“From where I’m standing, you should be begging for her respect.”

Mystique chose not to reply and Pyro let out a sigh of relief for that.  He knew he'd gone too far when he mentioned Mystique going to the Feds.  It was their own fault for not helping her in the government truck.  "That shit was just messed up."  He slid a hand down his tired face and looked towards Rogue’s door again.  He had to admit that confidence in his mentor had suffered ever since, but he still didn't want to have to admit he was wrong for leaving her there.  Mystique noticed what he was looking at.

“You know, there may be an even easier way to get her to agree.”  She said finally.  "One that wouldn't necessarily require any kind of 'rough treatment'."  John didn’t look back at her.  Instead he made his way over to the cell door and opened it wide, revealing a very wet Rogue sitting in the bath, still chained, her mouth opened slightly in surprise.

“Way ahead of you, Blue.”  Pyro said before making his way into Rogue’s cell and closing the door behind him.
