It seems that the ink is back to normal now. Honestly I'm a bit disappointed, even if the lighter colours did make it hard to read. It was a rather nice change from just black all the time.

I wonder what caused it?

Perhaps there was some sort of glitch in the journal's spell work?

That's certainly possible. I haven't the slightest idea how the journals work in the first place.
