Nothing, it looks like a regular apple. Only - more appealing.

I believe it is meant to make someone want to eat it. If it is poisonous, then it is not surprising.

I highly doubt something of the sort can be natural.

Yes, indeed. Though the basket was in the middle of the corridor, so the thing was not meant to anyone in specific.

The fact that it was so scrupulously nonspecific actually makes me more suspicious. But perhaps it is as you say.
