It's 2:11 AM and I took my prescribed sleep medicine a good four hours ago. Naturally, I am out of it... Very, very out of it... Because I'll probably be either highly amused or highly embarrassed by this later, especially by the fact that I'm so sleep deprived that it took twenty tries to spell embarrassed right, even after running it through a spellcheck. I still have five and a half pages of research paper to write, but I want my thoughts on Evolution-R chapter 3 out of the way. First of all, I would like to say... SPOILERS!
We begin the chapter with Lina telling Amelia to go save the townspeople, and I'm choosing now to finally give up on it being perspective and outright saying that this artist draws limbs out of proportion. It bugs me, a lot, especially since I've spent years working very hard on proportions, and this person is publishing my favorite series ever and DRAWING THE HANDS AND FEET TOO SMALL! And even if they're not anime-proportion, they're way too small to be ANY proportion! ARGH! I am nearly Amelia's height, and I have small hands and feet, so I can understand genetic differences... but this is insane!
Anyway, Amelia is very upset by this point, and reluctant to fight or see anyone fight Zelgadis, making this a rather logical thing to do, even if it will probably end up stressing everyone out a lot more later. We get a half-hidden shot of her crying before she runs off, and Zelgadis looks pretty depressed about that and muttering "Forgive me".
Naturally, the Amelia/Zelgadis fangirl in me (the one that makes me pay attention to Zel, despite my disinterest in angsty bishounen) is throwing a party and getting drunk, despite my best efforts. I'm going to have to blame that on the sleep deprivition in the morning.
We see some fighting, including Gourry looking angry... and... this artist's style does not portray that well. He looks more like that thing that impersonated Gourry in Knight of Aqua Lord. Lina remains mostly uneffected by the style change, although something's still off about her. Lina and Zelgadis exchange witty banter, and then we cut to Amelia, who is running through the destroyed city.
When did it get destroyed? I have no idea about that, OR where Pokota is (I thought he'd told us he was going to go stop the lesser demons). But Amelia has managed to compose and is ready to continue in the path of justice... then she steps on a severed hand, freaks out, and apparently starts throwing up. Even worse, she recognizes it as the hand of the kid who brought them to Radok back in chapter 2. Amelia apparently pulls herself together out of sheer willpower, and then... Declares that she's not going to let anyone else who could possibly be saved, die, and starts casting ressurection. Except judging by the way she's holding her arms, it looks like she's casting an AOE spell...
As far as I know, Slayers does not have AOE healing spells, though I have very little doubt that Amelia would be able to modify it. The problem is that Ressurection looks pretty draining when used on one target, and I'm pretty worried about what will happen as a result of trying to cast it on the entire city, if that's what she's trying to do. She better hope for a natural twenty on that fortitude save she's about to make... Say, does anyone know if any other characters are described as losing their hair color after major spellcasting, or is just Lina? Because that could be an important aspect of fanfiction.
Anyway, we cut back to Lina, Gourry, Zel, and Zuuma, to find that Gourry and Zuuma are locked in battle, and Zelgadis has apparently come up with an evil plan. Ozel looks like she really, really doesn't want to be a villain, and Zelgadis cleverly manages to give Lina the jar. Rezo apparently greets Lina from the jar, and Lina's having a WTF moment. Zelgadis reveals what we all knew all along "Hey, yeah, I wasn't really evil, I was just pretending" and Zuuma declares that he knew it all along (ORLY?) Sadly, we do not get to see much of a return of Gduza and... Dguld? I dunno his name. Pity, I liked them... well, Gduza, anyway, purely for the whole "hey, you fought my favorite character! OMG" purpose. Zuuma reveals that he is REALLY CREEPY.
He's also apparently knocked back Gourry and Zel and taken the sword of light. How many lines has poor Gourry had this chapter, anyway? Lina quickly attempts to cast a spell with her (still not proportional) hands (and arms...) but doesn't have enough time. In a panic, she does the first insane thing she comes up with.
She doesn't just try to tap into the Jar's power, she shoves her hand into it. With little regard for the consequences.
Predictably, this ends up with a very not-clothed Lina floating around in Rezo's mind/soul. According to the laws of anime and manga, because we do not immediately see a long and detailed flashback to one of Rezo's memories, probably involving at least one of the other characters, this was a bad idea. But at the very least, Lina's feet are in proportion again... almost... Actually, I think they're too long now.
There's a rather peaceful, random scene and a cyptic reference to Shabby, and then things blow up, Zel and Gourry freak out, and Lina has apparently been possessed by something. I'm going out on a limb and saying that there is a high, but not definite chance of it being everyone's favorite demon lord.
And I just counted Gourry's lines. He has three speechbubbles. One of them contains only "Lina!"
Wow, that chapter was...
